Thank you, Tdudette. I'm hoping at worst for a few weeks of spousal grouchiness and discomfort.

Sargent, Vermeer, are two of my top five. Both featured in the same museum is my idea of a good time. So glad you got to do it.

We enjoyed both exhibits -- learned something new about each artist. I think the "virtual line" is brilliant.

Sorry that you are missing your trip to DC Stoke and that your DH needs surgery. I wish him - and you - a swift recovery.

And TD - thanks so much for posting this. I have you to thank for turning me onto Sorolla and for opening my eyes to the breadth of JSS's work - I had no idea he went to Spain. Lovely photos from both you and k_marie - so thanks to you too!

Well, annhig, please add Anders Zorn to your art list! Am reading a new bio of Isabella Stewart Gardner and she and pal JSS loved Spain. He went 8 times! Zorn's name came up in that bio. So much art...

Will do TD. I've never heard of him, but then before you mentioned Sorolla I'd never heard of him either.

Ditto Paqngo's link thanks, k_marie!

Maybe Tracy can get to the SF exhibit, Tom!

Annhig, ISG bio authors called Zorn a preeminent artist! I hadn't heard of him either. Eesh. The three have quite similar looks.

I am really enjoying this trip report. I only know some of Sargent's works and would like to see more and learn more about him. I am delighted to hear about the exhibit coming to San Francisco.

I love both Vermeer and Calder. My husband and I enjoyed several Vermeer's during our recent trip to Berlin (we were the only ones in the room with them.)

Thank you, KTravel, and thanks k_marie for the San Francisco link. KTravel, I'm doing so poorly on Artle, that I'm willing to believe there may be folks who don't know about Vermeer. Maybe you were there at an off time?

For viewing JSS works, I recommend Isabella Stewart Gardner museum, the MFA and the Public Library, all in Boston. The Met in New York City; The Tate Britain. Of course, there are more!

KTravel, there’s an Alexander Calder gallery on the third level of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Mostly mobiles, as I recall.

And when you visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art, you can stand at the doorway at the top of the Rocky steps. Behind you, in the Great Stair Hall, will be his mobile Ghost. As you look out to the east, you will see the Swann Fountain in Logan Circle created in 1924 by his father, Alexander Stirling Calder. Beyond that you will see City Hall topped by a statue of William Penn by Calder’s grandfather, Alexander Milne Calder.

k_marie, I love the Calder gallery at the SFMOMA. However, I have not been to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It has always been on my never-ending "to do" list and now I have more reasons to go. How fascinating to see works by different Calder generations at one glance!

I've been to the National Gallery, albeit ages ago, and they have one of my favorite Caillebotte paintings there, Skiffs. Needless to say, I bought the poster, had it framed and see it every day!

For those who want to learn more about the National Gallery collection, and like to play "wordle", the National Gallery has its own daily. I am horrible at it! https://www.nga.gov/artle.html

National Gallery has Sargent's Repose.

I loved this the first time i saw it, on a tour of the White House. I can't remember who was President then, but apparently they can make requests

Thanks for the link, Surfergirl. Artle stumps me most of the time.

Do you recall the year you saw the work at the White House, stokebailey? BTW, JSS used that paisley scarf in several other works as well.
