Mini Poll: Your local public television / radio station
One thing I enjoy when I travel is checking out local public television and radio stations. I enjoy and support my local favorites, too. They're a part of my daily life.
What's your favorite station? What have you discovered in your travels? Do you support your local stations?
Here in LA, we're so lucky to have three public TV stations and 5 public radio stations. My favorites are KCET and KLCS for TV and on the radio, KCRW (eclectic music- one of a kind in the country and NPR and local news shows) and KUSC (all classical- great opera show on Saturday mornings and outstanding weekday evening programming).
You?

Portland Oregon, all classical music, we love it.
I almost started to like Country Western music on the drive we took from Florida to Oregon this past August..it seemed that some states have only country stations

Public radio is very popular here in the New Hampshire & Vermont area. I listen to both. New Hampshire converted to mostly talk radio a while back, but Vermont is a mix of classical, jazz, and a great Saturday night oldies show.
New Hampshire radio does carry American Routes however, which is a very interesting roots music show out of New Orleans. As for TV, 80% of our viewing is on Vermont Public TV. Love those pledge drive music specials! We are too far out for cable, plus I wouldn't pay for it anyway. We noticed in other parts of the country public radio seems to be a lot less popular.

Public radio (NPR) around here is WUNC, they are in an all talk format. For classical music, it's WCPE (theclassicalstation.org/net/com/whatever). I'm listening more to WCPE during the Christmas season because I get sick and tired of all Christmas music all the time on most commercial stations.
Public television is WUNC. Once again they are begging for money. When they are in this state (about 3-4 times per year) they take off all the programs I want to see and put on 'specials'. Most of the specials are quite old (there is always a John Denver music concert in the bunch). Needless to say, I'm not thrilled with this format. Have Nova night or The American Experience weekend, show off the current stuff. Also, WUNC doesn't always show national PBS programming. The biggest example I can think of right now is nationally, This Old House and Ask This Old House are scheduled for Thursday nights, in North Carolina the program is shown 9 days later on a Saturday afternoon.
Charlotte has it's own Public Television station.

Sometimes when I am in Memphis I listen to a public radio station that allows knowledgible individuals come in and play what they like, so its very eclectic but always good. Don't know the call letters.
In Boston we have WBUR and WGBH. BUR is all talk, GBH also plays classical, jazz and has a pretty good celtic show on Saturdays.

WGBH in Boston has several "satellites" here on cape cod. One, we enjoy (mostly in the car) has some great programs- Day to Day, "Fresh Air", and of course the "Car Guys". Classical music is on the Boston station, which we also enjoy. Today listened on my way to work the screenwriter and director of Syriana- fascinating- and a few days ago, on the Diane Reems show, an interview with the author of a book on chocolate, who made it fascinating!!

There are two public radio stations that I know of in San Antonio. KPAC, 88.3 is what we listen to throughout the day when we're home. Beautiful classical music and great programming--Musica Antigua, From the Top, Choral Masters, etc. Each weekday at noon Garrison Keilor provides history on a famous writer and reads a poem. Also, there are Star Date reports from the McDonald Douglas Observatory. KSTX, 89.1, is NPR.

For something completely different, there is WOMR (outermost radio) in Provincetown, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Community based radio with shows on a wide and quirky variety of themes staffed by volunteers. Some shows are more listenable than others. Best party of the summer is the music, food and wine festival they throw to raise funds.
And I listened to one in Albi, France last summer that I now listen to on line at www.radioalbiges.com. It is also community based and plays an eclectic mix of French chanson, American jazz, Provencal and Portuguese music. A few unlistenable shows thrown in that seem to be French political rap music, from what I can tell, but most of the time I really like it.

Wisconsin Public Radio - love their programing, including Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know? We listen to WERN or WHA, but here's a listing for all their regions:

Hats off to Minnesota Public Radio as well. We started listening to Garrison Keillor when we lived in Michigan's Upper Peninsula twenty years ago.
