Milwaukee Restaurants

Any recommendations for good restaurants near Milwaukee Hilton would be deeply appreciated. I am there for couple nights for business (but with free-enough evenings), and I do not discriminate the "ethnicity of a cuisine" so long as it tastes great :) I am also game for non-business settings/feel of a restaurant. Thanks so much.

Although I haven't been there, the Chophouse, in the Hilton, gets good reviews.

My favorite place for a special meal is Sanford's, which would require a short cab ride.

Thai: The King & I, Thai Palace
Italian: Mo's Cucina
Mediterranean: Yaffa
Brew Pub: Water Street Brewery

Milwaukee is full of great restaurants. Sanfords is definitely wonderful, but how about the Mason Grill - new restaurant at the Pfister hotel. Carnevour if you love meet on Milwaukee Street; Sake Tumi for sushi and fish. Eagans on Water; Moceans for Fish; Mo's Steak; to name just a few.

If you are looking for a steakhouse I'd recommend Butch's at 555 N James Lovell St. It is nothing fancy but I love the huge shrimp and my husband wows about their steaks.

Fantastic! This is plenty for a short trip. Really appreciate it.

I live near Chicago, but have made several trips to Milwaukee for their German Cuisine (I'm not German). Mader's is nearby: http://www.madersrestaurant.com/. On the East side of the river you can try Karl Ratzsch's http://www.karlratzsch.com/ - great "old European" setting.

LG2, Okay, if you are leaving Chicago to go to Milwaukee for a meal, it has to be good! So, I will go to one of your recommendations, and one from the other posts.

Any idea when is the Milwaukee irish-fest? I hear nice things about it and since I plan to visit Milwaukee couple more times in the next 3 months, I am trying to see if I can arrange to show up while it is on. Is there a web link for it?

Thanks a bunch for your posts!

Unless you really, really love German food, I wouldn't bother with Mader's or Karl Ratzsch's.

Irish Fest (my favorite of our many ethnic festivals) is the third weekend in August. The website is www.irishfest.com

I you want Irish food and possibly some music, go to County Clare.

The new restaurant in the Intercontinental - called Kilowat - is pretty good too.

Guys,

Thanks for your responses! Special thanks to abram and cathdav who suggested Sanfords. One of the best dinners I have ever had! There were three of us. We started with chilled radish soup with lemon cream (on the house), followed by two orders of Roasted Beet and Garlic Soup with Seared Escarole and Shrimp, and one of Provincial Fish Soup with Rouille. I finished it with Grilled Duck Breast with Italian Parsley Dumplings and Bacon Paprika Dressing, while my friends chose Chargrilled Loin of Elk on Mustard Green Gnocchi, Apple and Rutabaga, with Apple Jack Sauce, and Wild Striped Bass on Crab Hash, Pancetta Red, with Onion Vinaigrette. We chose a single dessert (too full....) but shared a fantastic rhubarb tart.

Amazing meal, great ambiance. Pricey ($200 for three) but worth it :) This restaurant can easily fit in any great "food town". If you live around Milwaukee, check out http://www.sanfordrestaurant.com/.

Deeply appreciate it.

I'm so glad you liked Sanford's. Because it is pricey, we only go there for special occasions, but we always feel that it's worth it. Hmmm, our anniversary is this month, so maybe that's where we'll go.

ComfyShoes:
Irishfest in Milwaukee is the best festival in the US for Irish music and will host 130,000+ over 4 days. One does not go for the food, but for the music! (Well, some actually go for the beer.) Great site, great people, and we make side trips to other places. We're from Denver, and we go EVERY year.

Thanks, O&H :)

one of our favorite restaurants is owned by Sanfords. It is in the 3rd ward and called Coquette Cafe. There are lots of other neat little "warehouse" restaurants in the area which has all bee rehabbed.

ComfyShoes Oct 7th, 2007 09:02 AM

Thanks, k. I just hope you made a spelling error with the "bee" :)
