Decorah, Iowa is the Nordic capital of Iowa due to the fact it was settled by Norwegians. Sights include Victorian architecture, Nordi Dunning’s Springs, Ice Cave State Preserve, historic downtown, Malanaphy Springs, a natural spring cascading along the river’s edge, Porter House Museum, Steyer Opera House, Vesterheim--the National Norwegian-American Museum and Heritage Center, Luther College and the nearby World’s Smallest Church. There is the 11-mile Trout Run Trail which encircles the city and crosses trout streams five times. Located in Northeast Iowa near the Minnesota border.
Northfield, Minn is the quintessential college town (with Carleton College and St. Olaf College) and has a lively historic downtown lined restaurants, coffeehouses, art galleries and boutiques shops. Other sights include the Carleton Japanese Garden, Cowling Arboretum (with many trails), Cannon River Wilderness Area and more. Minneapolis is only 30 minutes north.
