Midnight arrival JFK, I'm guessing a cab is the best idea?

Midnight Oct 1st after flying from Brisbane to LAX, 6 hours to kill and then on to NYC. I'll presume a cab to our Hotel near the UN is the most sensible option? There will be two of us, with two suitcases.

Thanks

That's what I would do, yes.

You could arrange a car service through Carmel or Dial7, but given that the cab fare is a fixed price from JFK the simplest thing to do is walk to the taxi stand and hop in.

Thanks, just out of interest what should I expect to pay for a cab from JFK to the UN.

The flat rate is $45 from JFK to Manhattan. Tolls (I belive are $5 depending on the route taken) and tip (your discretion, but $10 would be an ok round #) would bring total to $60.

Ditto J62.

Details at http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/pas...cab_rate.shtml

Good luck, you'll be wiped, it'll take you two days and nights before you can function properly - can't you spend a night in LA?

There is a flat rate to/fro JFK and Manhattan. The fare is $45 - assuming bridget toll and tip that's $55-$60.

At midnight I would organize a car service in advance so you have o waiting for a cab. check the Carmel or Dial 7 web sites for discounts. (Fare will be the same s for a cab.)

Thanks as always. We've done it before with a night in LA and we think its worse. You have to be up and organised to catch your next flight. This way we've got 5 nights NYC before we collect our hire car, to recover. We are also flying B/class the whole way, which does make a 'huge' difference.

I will check out car services, thanks again.

Dear Aussie Dreamer,
Just wanted to tell you of our experience, after a flight from Frankfurt into JFK, supposedly arriving 8pm, so we thought we'd be fine on public transport - trying to save money on our RTW ticket, for other things.
Anyway, the flight had to circle for hours due to bad weather, and not enough landing spots, so that by the time we eventually got our luggage, and took the monorail to the Metro stop, it was after midnight, and very lonely, as well as pouring rain. We are retired Aussies, and travel independently with a spirit of adventure, so we boarded the train with only half a dozen others, but soon found out that the Metro had been replaced by a bus for some of the way due to flooding - I remember climbing up a waterfall of steps, crossing a road in ankle deep water, back onto another train to Columbus Circle, change again etc and arriving tired but elated - we had certainly accomplished something. After the streamlined transport of Germany, New York public transport was old and tired, but we saw a side of New York and talked to people we otherwise would have missed. The New Yorkers were wonderful - a man at the airport luggage waiting area even offered me $50 for a taxi, as he was worried about our coping. Though it was tiring and a little scary at the time, it was truly a memorable experience. To come home, we got the private bus back from the Port Authority - a good option, not sure if they run at midnight. Have fun in New York!

PS Now I come to think of it, it might have been LaGuardia, not JFK!! But after writing all that, I couldn't delete it, could I? Sorry!
