Mid -town NYC hotel with teenagers
 

My husband and I are teachers and we will be traveling to NYC in June with 10 of our theatre class students. We need a safe and clean hotel in a safe location so we are able to walk to the theatre. Several years ago we stayed at the Wellington but it was so very dirty! We will also be seeing the city by subway during the day and using taxis in the evenings. Could you please recomend places to eat? Several years ago the kids favorite eating place was Carmines. No Hard Rock Cafe for this group.

Try the Travel Inn on W 42nd St. It's very reasonably priced and they even have a pool, which I am sure the kids will love, not many pools at hotels in the city.

It's pretty easy to walk to Times Square from there, and there are TONS of restaurants on every block, you won't have a problem finding something for everyone's taste, including a Subway, Blimpie and pizza, and lots of nicer restaurants as well.

I think the hotel is just under $100 a night, and clean. My cousin, and her family stayed there a year ago, and thought it was fine, since most of the time they spent in the room was to sleep. There's also a place right there for breakfast and munchies.

I'd also suggest checking www.hotels.com and priceline for additional suggestions.

I always recommend the Belvedere on 48th street. Rooms with tax should run under $200 but the hotel has become very popular and it might not be possible to get enough rooms for June. I will be at the hotel next week (can't wait to go) so hopefully it will be as good this time as in the past.

Super 8 in Times Square gets lots of recommendations on this forum. Don't know the exact price but it should be in your price range.

Reco you move quickly in order to get 6 rooms at a reasonable place. I wouldn;t worry so much over walking to the theater - the subway is very easy to use - and perfectly safe day or night (I wouldn;t ride alone at 3am - but a group after the theater is fine) and that will give you a lot more options.

You might also want to look into scheduling a special tour at Lincoln Center - I understand they sometimes offer things like that to theater students.

Try www.applecorehotels.com for (usually) good rates at the Comfort Inns, Ramada, Super 8 etc. in NYC. The nice things for your kids is that most of these hotels include a light a light breakfast in the rate which will help them save a little money.

Belvedere would be a good choice. It is well located and the rooms have little fridges for things like sodas and juice. We just paid 140 a night (February) but I suspect the prices might go up a bit for June.

Fun French restaurant on 51st between 8th and 9th called Tout Va Bien. There is a Brazilian restaurant attached to the hotel that is supposed to be great--caters more to meat-eaters so I have not tried it.

Actually I just checked for June 10-14 and the Belvedere seems booked but the Travel Inn was available, fluctuating from 140 for the first night to 175 for a couple of the nights.

I second Margie's recommendation. Particularly the Super 8 as I've stayed there, haven't stayed at the others. The location is great and their continental breakfast is very good. You should be able to get a decent rate there.

Another idea is the Radio City Apartments. Well located for you purposes and rooms have kitchenettes. I assume you realize if the kids are under 21 and will be staying in rooms w/o adult supervision you'll need to clear this with the hotel.

Places to eat besides Carmines...Ruby Foos for Asian. John's Pizzeria on west 44 st (in a converted church) for Italian (not just pizza). The Hourglass Tavern on restaurant row (although you'd probably fill the place so book now!!) Virgil's BBQ for some of the best in the city. Becco's also on rest row (46 st b/w 8th-9th) has an all you can eat pasta dinner for $21.95. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is corny and not haute cuisine but they might find it fun if they know Forrest Gump movie.

Do any of you folks have comments to make about the Salisbury Hotel, Carnegie Suites or the Comfort Inn Midtown?

I will second nytraveler's suggestion about Lincoln Center. We took the topur last summer and thought it was great. Seems like a natural for theater students. Here's a link

The Salisbury is a fabulous hotel. My parents stay there often and I cannot say enough nice things about the hotel.

Excellent Midtown location across the street from Carnegie Hall (get a tour) and two blocks from Central Park.

You are a stones throw from Times Square. You can walk there in two minutes.

I would eat at Becco this time around. Excellent and the pasta special is $25. Three choices of all you can eat freshly made pastas.

The Salisbury is very well located although not right in the theater district, it's an easy walk. The Carnegie Suites is an excellent location. Some mixed reviews on tripadvisor.com. Both of these are suite hotels with kitchens in the rooms. Comfort Inn Midtown is in the theater district and generally gets good reviews.

Check out the Edison; it's been a few years since we stayed there, but it was just fine for us--convenient to everything, wonderful and helpful staff. Rooms are small but clean--nothing fancy.
