Mid-town East NYC Restaurant Suggestions Please

From suggestions given here I had excellent dinners on my last trip to Manhattan (thank you!). I have a close friend with 20 y-o daughter leaving for a first visit in ten days and she has asked for restaurant help. They will be staying near 8th Ave & 34th St. Any suggestions for great restos generally in the area at about $50 pp including tax and tip? No food restrictions, no chains thanks, and they love to try new foods. Thanks so much.

It's not an area with a ton of good eating places - modest/moderate good ones are found in droves along 9th ave in the 40s - and in more residential areas.

nyt, thank you for that. Not an area where I would stay but they need to be budget conscious and found a hotel which was well priced. Have you got specific recommendations for 9th ave & 40s?

Vincenzo, thank you for the Cara Mia suggestion.

McLaurie, that took some time and I'm very appreciative - I'm sure they will be as well.

McL, just took a quick peek at Menu Pages, what a great site. Can't wait to try it out myself, hopefully in a few months. Thanks again.

If you don't want Korean BBQ, the go south to Chelsea or north to Times Square. There are loads of places in both areas. But the Herald Square area is a culinary wasteland.
