Mid-range hotel recommendations in Maui
We are planning our honeymoon for November, and we would appreciate some mid-range hotel/condo recommendations for Maui - please don't suggest the Renaissance or Kea Lani or anything like that; we just can't afford it.

We would like to stay around Kaanipali, Napili, Kihei, or Wailea for less than $200/night with tax. Ocean view & amenities don't matter too much to us - we are spending our money on activities instead.

BTW, has anyone heard any reviews of the Maui Coast Hotel? That's one place we are considering. Thanks

You can stay at the very Hawaiian Kaanaplai Beach Hotel. It's along the strip of hotels along Kaanapali. It's very (walking on the path that connects all the hotels) near Whalers Village which has shopping and dining and near Black Rock which is great for snorkeling. Expedia lists it for $180 in Nov, http://royalhawaii.com/orsystem/user/property.asp lists it for $176 including tax.

There are many discounters that can get you a rate under $200.

Aloha;

I would recommend the Poynesian Shores condo in Mahinahina. The beach is not great but the view is to die for. You can probably get a deal at rate of about $700 per week plus tax. Awesome deck right on the ocean for sunsets. Only 52 units in a two storey complex. I am not an owner but have stayed there. Very friendly nice people. Nice small pool but no hot-tub.

For the money the place dejahma recommends is better and in a better location than South Kihei and the Maui Coast. The Maui Coast is across the street from the water and does not have much of a view. At least at the Polynesian Shores you'd be on the ocean side.

Did you think of Priceline as an option? People have been getting the Hyatt Maui for $65/nt and the Maui Prince for $145/nt. Go to www.biddingfortravel.com for more specific info. I've been using Priceline & BRT for my last hotel stays and have saved hundreds thus far for 4 & 5* hotels.

We stayed at The Aston Kaanapali Shores a year ago, and were very happy there. Our room was very nice, clean, and well located. We had a kitchen, as well as well as a washer-dryer on site. Driving to The Whaler's Village took only 7-10 minutes. Across the street is a supermarket. Having breakfast and maybe lunch, in your room, or lanai helps the budget. Not only that, you can have very excellent food choices for less money than restaurants charge.
On site there is an excellent restaurant - The Beach House. Breakfasts and dinners are wonderful, and VERY reasonably priced. In the morning you can whale-watch. I hope you will be able to.
We have always stayed in Wailea, but thought on this last trip to stay in Kaanapali, we were not sorry. Therer is a definite lack of restaurants and activities in Wailea, although, it is a beautiful part of Maui. I do love it there.

Just returned from kaanapali beach hotel. we were very happy. Beautiful beach and within walking distance of Whaler's Village (Shops, (ABC store) and restaurants). No need for beach view, save and get garden view. Rooms were big, comfortable and recently renovated. Staff was very friendly. Great snorkleing right at Black Rock, 2 minute walk down the beach.

Kaanapali Beach Hotel is one of the more affordable properties on Kaanapali Beach, a long beautiful beach. Hoewever, right next door to it is The Whaler, a condo property. The cost is about the same as Kaanapali Beach Hotel. In a condo you have your own kitchen. Also right next door is Whaler's Village (stores, restaurants, bars, etc).
