Miami to Key West travel time

I searched, but did not find this question specifically answered, so forgive me if it's a repeat. How long could I plan on the drive from Miami to Key West being on a Monday morning (leaving around 7ish) in January? I know it's around 130 miles, but I know the time varies considerably with traffic.

Thanks.

4 hours w/o any major delays.

Figure on not averaging more that 35 mph due to the roads and traffic, even on a good day.

4 hours is a good estimate. We've made that trip many times and it always seems to take that long.

It's going to take you about 4 hours, as above posters have indicated. But unless you absolutely must be in Key West at a specific time, sit back and enjoy the ride, tourist traps and all. Stop for some real Key lime pie at Manny and Isa's in Islamorada. It's inevitable that at some point you're going to find yourself behind an RV going about 30 miles an hour. You can't let it get you crazy.

I think it'll take longer than the standard 4 hours since you're leaving on a Monday morning at 7:00 am, or so. I assume you're "leaving" from Miami; if that's the case, you'll have to contend with early morning rush hour traffic. That will probably take another 30 or so minutes on.

Keep in mind, one good wreck on US1 and that 4 hour trip can turn into six hours easily.

Everyone is right with the 4 hour est., but please DO as Ken suggested and make it a leisurely trip with stops anywhere that catch your fancy.
We were grumbling about having to drive it the first time we went, but we had such a blast (taking pictures of each other inside the fiberglass shark mouth, stopping for conch chowder and key lime pie along the way, going into the tacky shops) that it was one of the best parts of the trip!

Can't escape the minimum 4 hours Jenny. We use to drive from Ft. Myers-almost 5 hours! Now I live in Atlanta and the flights there are murder on the wallet!!!

If I had the choice, mind you, I'd opt to fly so I'd get there quicker to enjoy myself. All depends on how much time you have for your vacation...Key West is the coolest place-you'll regret having to leave! Have a ball-but look out for the chickens and cats...

The heaviest of traffic is going the other way, INTO Miami. I agree with the above posters, it should take 4 hours.

Thanks all for your help! We are looking forward to the drive, and will take our time, as suggested. We're actually planning on camping, so we are driving to take all of our gear. We can't wait!
