Miami: Rents & Jobs?
 

We're newlyweds in our late 20s/early 30s considering moving to Miami from NYC. A musician and a graduate student.

What are the best neighborhoods or areas to live in that are safe, with restaurants and cafes, culture, and near the beach but NOT necessary AND under $1000/month rent (2BR pref.)?

How about jobs? He's a saxophone player with a MA in Music. Me a graduate student studying Spanish.

Any other opinions on quality of life, etc. would be appreciated.

I would live near where you are going to grad school.

Miami is so diverse, there isn't one single way to pinpoint the best overall neighborhood.

Downtown is the new happening area. You may want to start there.

I think the Sun-Sentinel.com is a great place to look for South Florida rents. Also the Miami Herald.

Get ready for the change, Miami is dead town compared to NYC. It is true South Beach is nice because of the water and weather (sometimes) but there is nothing else there.
All along Biscayne Blvd, there is a lot of construction and seems to be the place to be in the near future... rent is not cheap. A two bedroom in a nice, trendy area could be close to $1300. and up, areas like coconut grove, coral gables, south beach or biscayne blvd.
Your Spanish skills, good for the area but you will not have advantage over other candidates...
Employment market in Miami is really bad right now...in here it is either banking or tourism, lattest does not paid well.
CULTURE.... not the city to look for..

How are you going to move if you're still a student?Are you actually spending money on a graduate degree in spanish?

Does anyone know if Aventura is an up and coming area for young people?

Is that you, Tara? Boy, that would be a funny coincidence if someone else was a graduate student studying Spanish and had a husband who played the saxiphone! Did you know that there's someone identical to your description looking for information in Mexico, San Diego, etc., etc., etc.? When you find utopia, let us know, huh?

To be fair, the poster looking for San Francisco, San Diego and other places is not a student. But, it does look kind of similar, and I guess for less than $1000 a month they could cross off SD and SF.
