Miami or the Keys

Hi I wanted to surprise my husband on his 40th with a trip to Miami.I also want to go to the Keys. I have never been to either of them. Does anyone have any recommendations? Should I spend more time in the Keys? Any ides would be appreciated. Thanks Kelly

How long is your trip? For a weekend, I wouldn't bother with the keys. Ten days? I would head down to Key West for a weekend.

What kind of things do you want to do? In Miami, I'm assuming you mean Miami Beach. Do you want South Beach or something north? Coconut Grove?

Let me add that the keys and Miami are night and day. Miami is more "dress flashy get your groove on hip" while the keys are bathing suit/fishing/ rainbow flip flops/t-shirt "drink a beer at 9AM" type place.

Hi, Thanks for your interest. Both sound appealing. I wanted to go for a week in February. I plan to rent a boat for a couple of days, and a car. He loves fine food and interesting places. What is the difference between South Beach and Coconut grove? Thanks for your help! Kelly

South Beach is part of Miami Beach (North Beach, Mid Beach, South Beach) which is the barrier island off the mainland of Miami. Coconut Grove is the beach on the mainland. Biscayne Bay is between the two.

Are you an experienced boater? If not (lake boating doesn't count), I would not rent a boat in the keys. The water is very shallow and fines are very stiff for running aground.

I would rent a boat in Ft. Lauderdale.

Key West seems like it may be a good cross between the two. Tons of great dining. I would also strongly urge you to either take the Fast Cat or seaplane to the Dry Tortugas.

I'm thinking he may have fun in the keys....he could do some charter fishing...maybe rent a samll boat....just be relaxed. Think about renting a small cottage or house if you want to get away from the hotel hum drum....try www.rentkeywest.com ....but act fast....by the way, in February you have a better chance for good weather in the keys

We recently stayed at the Kona Kai Resort in Key Largo- very nicely equipped cottages and very nice grounds on the water....www.konakairesort.com- check it out!
