Miami or New Orleans for 3 days in mid December

I'll have 3 or 4 days, depending on flights, from December 9th/10th to the 13th, to spend in either Miami or New Orleans.

I would have just finished a 4.5 month backpacking trip in South America and will be flying in from Ushuaia. The flight prices and durations are similar.

I've always wanted to go to New Orleans for the music, the bars and the architecture. Especially the music and I hear it's a very friendly place. But lying on a beach also sounds appealing after a month of hiking in the Patagonias.

I'm looking for a laid back, relaxing, chilled out time. Definitely not renting a car but taking the occasional taxi is fine.

After these 3 or 4 days, I'll be visiting family in Houston from the 14th for a couple of days and then fly back to London via Miami.

What would you do? Would you pick Miami or New Orleans?

Do BOTH. Definitely go to NO, visit the family in Houston and then since your London flight is going to be via Miami (on American, correct?) stop off in Miami for a couple of days.

@dukey1 The return flight on BA from MIA is already booked for Tuesday night. I'll leave Houston on Sunday night or Monday morning. That only gives me about a day in Miami after the family visit. That might be enough?

Personally, I don't care for Miami or find the beaches in Miami to be that wonderful any more, but I have not been to NO. For a beach for 3 or 4 days, I would head over to the Gulf Coast - Clear Water, etc. or go to NO.

New Orleans is more interesting.

Plus you can try to have fam join you because it's only a few hours from Houston (then you can avoid going to Houston and go to Miami after New Orleans).

As long as you're taking votes, New Orleans
