Miami Calle Ocho Festival Question
 

My wife, myself and our 9 month old son are flying into Miami on March 2nd. We're staying in a house on Key Largo for the week, until Sunday March 10th. I understand the Calle Ocho Festival is that week, culminating on Sunday. <BR><BR>My grandfather was from Cuba and I would like to experience some of the culture, but I am a bit concerned about the safety and comfort of my wife and child at this event. Can anyone familiar with it give me some advice as to whether to try it and if so, when might be a good time? I'm also open to other sites to see, things to do in Miami for a day trip. My wife and I have been to South Beach at night. We are renting a car at the airport. Thanks for all input.<BR>

The Cubans at Calle Ocho are few and far between - there are more Central Americans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans there. <BR>If you want to experience some Cuban 'culture' - head for Hialeah. Eat at a diner there, order a cafecito or a batida.

As a Cuban-American I totally agree that <BR>the Calle-Ocho festival is not the place to experience Cuban Miami. I'd definitely be concerned about your family's safety and comfort at this event.<BR><BR>My suggestion is to have dinner at the most famous Cuban restaurant in Miami-<BR>Versailles- Its located at 3555 SW 8th St. and its where Cubans go to eat Cuban food.<BR><BR>You can also be very Cuban and take your son with you to see a nightclub show. The Tropigala at the Fountainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach has a great show and a fantastic Cuban band led by Gaby Gabriel. You'll think you're in Havana in the 1950's.

Sorry, I misread your son's age. I thought he was 9 years old. 9 months is a little young to go to a nightclub-even for Cubans!

Ugh no, not Versailles, the food there really isn't that great. They reheat frozen food when you order! *shudder* go there for coffee and desert, but not for dinner. Try anyplace else. My favorite is Ayestaran, http://www.miami.diningguide.net/data/d100238.htm
