Miami airport--safety??

We arrive in December 2017 and need a ride to cruise terminal. How safe is an uber? The ship offers its own transport but very expensive.....But safety first. Suggestions??

Uber is as safe as any other form of transportation. It is probably going to be cheaper than a regular taxi, which is also available, as are shared shuttles like SuperShuttle. All of these are equally safe.

The fare from MIA to the port by regular cab is a $24 flat fare including tip. I suspect Uber may be cheaper.

Assume you are going to the Miami cruise terminal rather than Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglade). Just checking.

i think Miami cruise terminal---not Ft. Lauderdale I will check---why?

Dukey1 Mar 29th, 2017 03:34 AM

Why? Are you kidding? BECAUSE Port Everglades is 30 miles from MIA and the Port of Miami is only 8-9 miles away.

fmpden Mar 29th, 2017 05:16 AM

And I think more cruises go out of Port Everglades than out of Miami. So be sure you know where you are going.

I am hearing it is a 7 mile drive so guessing it is Miami, but will check for sure

My question has to do with safety, not distance. A few years ago there was ad press about Miami terminal

doug_stallings Mar 29th, 2017 09:18 AM

Huh? I'm not sure I understand what you mean then with regard to safety. I'm not aware of any specific issues at MIA.

fmpden Mar 29th, 2017 11:48 AM

This is getting very confusing. US airports are US airports with similar degrees of safety. I cannot think of any airport not being relatively safe. I would never had guessed that someone would shoot up the Ft. Lauderdale airport but someone did. Regardless, we were there a week later with not much concern.

So what are you are you really asking about? Pickpockets, muggings, what ???? What is an "ad press"?

PS -- Port Everglades is about 7 miles or less from the Ft. Lauderdale airport. That is why smart people keep asking about the same question - which is it???

wordsmith1 Mar 29th, 2017 09:18 PM

There was bad press but obviously all of you missed it---and it was about many instances, not just one....no need to be so defensive .....forget I asked.

Dukey1 Mar 30th, 2017 12:08 AM

Don't worry because your refusal to point out the supposedly "bad press" means we definitely will forget you asked.

The OP has an excellent but partial memory.

Several years ago, there were numerous reports about the area _surrounding_ MIA. Travelers were urged not to linger in the area and to remain on major roads. There were posts on travel forums suggesting that people not make reservations at hotels that were not directly adjacent to the airport.

While s/he should find out which cruise terminal their cruise is departing from, I don't think they should have concerns about traveling there from MIA.

However, if they are departing from Port Everglades and coming from New York or Boston, they will find tha JetBlue's flights to FLL are often much cheaper than flights to MIA. It is also the last domestic airline that is enjoyable to fly.

It still would be helpful if the OP knew for sure the correct cruise terminal. Why is it that those who asking confusing questions get so defensive when asked to clarify the question?

Ultimately, I'm guessing the safety of using Uber is directly related to the safety of the driver and the other motorists.

MIA itself isn't horrendously unsafe nor is it a complete dump (like LaGuardia). It's just a random sprawl that has had to grow and adapt to being a fairly urban airport with expanding passenger requirements but no extra room.
