Mexican restaurant in Houston
I guess this may be a tough question but where would I find the best Mexican restaurant in Houston area? Not just in terms of food but also in terms of ambience and decor, I mean, the kind of place where you would take folks from out of town?
Also, where could I hang out with friends during the evenings? Not really for club hoping but just a place where you can go, have coffee, watch people etc. For instance, Austin has 6th street. I hear that the Village Arcade in West University is one such place?

As to Mexican restaurants, you really can't go wrong with a Pappasito's (any location) for quality of food and surroundings. For a less expensive and funkier option, I also really enjoy Chuy's. For out of town guests, a great place to go for a Mexican breakfast on the weekends is Goode Company Hamburgers & Taqueria on Kirby (just south of 59).
A great resource for checking out restaurants is http://houston.citysearch.com/. Also, pick up a copy of the Houston Press around town. It's a weekly free newspaper that has a great restaurant review section.
Also, do yourself a favor and visit Central Market now that you're in town. It's a fabulous market at the corner of Westheimer and Weslayan. The original market is located in Austin, and I understand the Central Market in Austin is the #2 tourist attraction in the city. It has the best selection of produce, cheese, seafood, prepared food, etc. etc. etc. that you will find ANYWHERE! I know people that live over 2 hours away and make a weekly trip to Central Market.
Welcome to Houston!

Bellairegirl,
I live in Austin and I didn't know that Central Market is the #2 tourist attraction here. I presume the Capitol is #1? Every day I learn something new on this board, but this is the first time I have learned something new about my own city!! It's been a few years since I've visited Central Market, I must go check it out again. Thanks for the idea.

P_M - Looks like you're right -- I found the quote I had heard about: "The original Central Market opened in 1994. It is one of the nation?s pre-eminent food stores, and is the second most-visited tourist destination in Austin, behind the state capital." Here's a link to the whole article: http://www.specialtyfood.com/do/news...Article?id=743

My personal favorites would include Pico's Mex-Mex , El Tiempo Cantina (premium Mexican food), or Mi Pueblito Place on Richmond (transport yourself 2000 miles south). There are so many good places. It will take you many years to find your favorites. You will like the salsa at one, the margaritas at another, the atmosphere at this one, the guacamole at that one.

I like Pappasito's & I'm not a mexican food fan. The place is fun & the food is excellent. My husband often took business clients & visiting family there when we lived in the area. Try the fajitas loco & also shrimp en brochette. Those were my favorites.

Depends on the part of town. And I guess you are asking about Tex-Mex, which is different that Central Mexican.
I like Chuy's, but haven't been there in several years. A little loud an rowdy for me.
I still have to try Pico's. Everyone I know raves.
Otillia's is excellent.
I am not as big a fan of Pappasito's. They do give you lots of food. And there is one almopst everywhere you go.
For Margarita's and a good patio, you can't go wrong with Tila's.
Try some of the taqueria's near you. Little hole in the walls have some of the best border food you will find.
As for hang out ambiance. Downtown is starting to be very interesting. Now that the weather has cooled (well except for today), Downtown street cafes could be very fun. Go to Cava Bistro or Bossa and have drinks on the patio.
Depending on your attitude about alternative lifestyles, lower Montrose and Westheimer can be very interesting at times. Katz's Deli after 2:00 am or Berryhill's on Montrose on a Sunday.
To see a "sign of the apocalypse", as declared by Lewis Black, go to the Starbucks at the corner of West Gray and Shepherd, get a coffee and look across the street to see ... another Starbucks. Afterwards, go to Laffstop.
Also, it is festival time. The Greek Festival just finished. I think Italian Festival was last week. Anybody know anything else going on over the next month?
