Mexican food in San Diego

We are off to San Diego in January for a short trip, 3 nights-4 days, for our annual So Cal Mexican food fix. We includes me (the Mom) and DS age 15. We plan to view the Dead Sea Scrolls, zoo and see Jesus Christ Superstar.

We will stay downtown at the Omni (got a great rate of $139 through Expedia).

Any other suggestions for great Mexican food? Some of our favorites include Old Town Mexican Cafe for carnitas and Robertos drive thru.

We stayed in Coronado last time and ate at Miguels ...probably won't go back to Coronado this trip. We may venture up to La Jolla and look at the UCSD campus. I remember a good Mexican restaurant in La Jolla that started with an "A".

Is Chueys still around and good?I think it's near the Coronado bridge.

Other suggestions on things to do?

We returned to Chuey's this summer after about 20 years. Yes, it's still there, but in a much larger and newer building than before. It's kind of characterless in my book. You sit at big folding tables which seems like a hotel room set up for a meeting. Food was excellent though.

In Old Town, we like the Coyote Cafe. The carnitas are great.

Alfonso's in La Jolla is one of our fav's and they have the best nachos and love the marg's!
Old Town Mex has great carnitas with the homemade tortillas..
If you are staying at the Omni for $139 which is a killer deal..across from the US Grant is a great taco shop but can't remember the name..
Las Quatro Milpas under the Coronado Bridge on Crosby is one of the best places in SD!!!
Take a cab to it and have it wait for you..it's about 10-15 blocks away..
The food is beyond good...they have waits out the door..
Brigantine has some of the best fish tacos for $2 on happy hour everyday..
I have never been a fan of Chuey's but like neo says it really is bland inside..Las Quatro's is down the street..
Best taco shop in LJ is Bahia Don Bravo in the Bird Rock area on LJ Blvd..ocean view and killer mex!
Have fun Ellen!

Thanks for the great tips! Alfonsos, of course, the name suddenly escaped me. I think Chueys is off the list now, but Las Quatro Milpas is one that I think I went to many years ago. It's a definite for this trip! Will check out the other suggestions as well. Thanks!

I'll be sure to write a trip report when we return!

Hey Ellen..
Have a great trip and with Chuey's, I think I am the only one in SD that doesn't care for it..
I really like the Omni and it's one of the few places in downtown SD that we go to the bar at McCormicks and Schmicks that has some of the cheapest drinks in town..on Thursday they used to have a $19.99 Lobster dinner that was also one of the best deals in town..
Island Prime is really good on Harbor Island across from the airport..
Look forward to your Trip Report and have a great time!
