What's the closest metro stop for Georgetown? Is it foggy bottom? And once you're off of the metro - how do you walk to georgetown - thanks!

Yes, Foggy Bottom. Head north on 23rd St.; when you get to Washington Circle (the big round intersection/park) exit to the northwest, up Pennsylvania Ave, then when it intersects M street, you're there! Take a left, and you'll find that M and Wisconsin are the "main drags" in G'town. I strongly advise that you get yourself a map before you arrive.

Taxis are pretty cheap in DC, if there are 2 or 3 of you, consider taking a cab.

Taxis in DC don't charge by mile, but by zone. As I understand it, most of hte downtown, from the Capitol to 22nd St., is in Taxi Zone 1, so the fare from anyplace in that Zone to G'twon ould be the same, whether you get into the cab at Foggy Bottom or at Union Station!

Union Station/Capital Hill to Georgetown is three zones. Georgetown is a seperate zone from Foggy Bottom (Rock Creek is the boundary) so that would be two zones.

There is a blue bus that runs between the Metro and Georgetown. It picks up at the South Dupont Circle exit on the Red Line and at Foggy Bottom on the Blue line.

thanks for all of the help - another question about the metro - is there some sort of savings pack for travel on the metro? We intend to use the metro as much as we can so any info on ticket packages would be appreciated.

You can save by buying an all-day pass or by avoiding travel during weekday rush hours. Details at www.wmata.com.

Metro costs the same all day.

Union Station, Foggy Bottom and Georgetown are all in different zones. I don't know the zone numbers, just that they are different. Between US and FB or FB and GT you would be charged for two zones and between US and GT it would be three.

The Metro does not cost the same all day, as can easily be verified at the wmata site. The staff booth at every Metro station has a chart showing the peak and off-peak fares between that station and others.

Regular fares are in effect weekdays from opening to 9:30 AM and 3-7 PM; reduced fares are in effect at all other times. The regular (peak) fare from Union Station to Greenbelt (as an example) is $2.90 but the off-peak fare is $2.35. There are some short trips that charge the minum ($1.35) at all times; perhaps these are e only routes that gnr is familiar with.

The official "Welcome to DC Guide" taxi fare generator shows maps and calculations that indicate that Union Station to most Georgetown addresses is 2 zones.

Just to complicate things a tiny bit more, you can also reach parts of Gtown (near the University) from the Roslyn Metro. You walk across Key Bridge (a beautiful view) and you are in Gtown.

We don't know where the original poster is travelng from -- it could be many miles from Georgetown!

You could use the all day pass, but it's not good before 9:30 (I think!) a.m. on weekdays (unless holiday). We bought the 7 day &quot;short trip&quot; pass, which was good all day, but <b>during peak</b> travel times was valid only for the first $1.85 (I think it's now the first $2.10) of any fare - you had to pay the difference when exiting. No extra charge at all during non-peak. We never had to pay the &quot;extra&quot; during our week there. Check wmata.com for details.

The proposal had been to stop &quot;off-peak&quot; faes and make them the same all day. Didn't realize that they didn't actually go through with it - though its only a matter of time.

Did they redraw the taxi zone boundaries recently? Rock Creek isn't the boundary any more.

thanks for all of the insight - I will be staying at the Hyatt Regency in the Capital area. I will be doing a TON of walking, but by looking at the map, it seems Georgetown is far from the hotel. In fact, we intend to walk all of the memorials (wwII, lincoln, jefferson, FDR, etc.) one night. Anyway, we are going to Arlington in Sunday am (see my other post) and intend to go from there to Georgetown for the afternoon. If there is an easier way than the metro to get there, I'm more than happy to hear about it. Thanks again!

radiofanatic, MikeT has the best suggestion of taking the metro from Arlington Cemetery to Rosslyn. It's a one stop continuation on the blue line. The walk over Key Bridge into G'town is a nice one (provided no rain or chilly winds). Long ago I worked in Rosslyn and we walked regularly to G'town for lunch.

The taxi alternative has of course been mentioned.

You should check whether www.wmata.com has a trip planner; many cities have these, where you can plug in 2 addresses and get directions. There certainly are buses into G'town; I've seen them! If there's a handy bus for your route, the trip planner will know.
