Meteor Crater

Where is Meteor Crater located? we'll be at GC next weekend and then to Utah, but read about this in a post but don't know where it is.
Thanks for the help.

Hi hockeymom,

Meteor Crater east of Flagstaff. Take I-40 east for about 39 miles and then Meteor Crater Road for 6 miles.

I've never been. It's a private enterprise with a visitor center.

I've been there before. It's got to be what, 3 hours or so from GC? If you're not a techie or ET type, I don't know if it's worth the drive. I made it from PHX while on business just to check it out but it's sorta like Chevy Chase in Vacation where you stand at the rim and look at it for a few secs and then you're ready to go. They do have some sort of tour where you walk the rim with a guide but only on certain days under certain weather conditions. When I was there it was way too windy.

Meteor Crater is the only part of our trip to Arizona that I wished we'd skipped. It was fairly pricey, a big hole in the ground, very windy and cold and little to do. Maybe you could skip it and go to some of the amazing free parks in AZ? We loved the volcanic park (can't remember the name of it) close to Flagstaff.

We drove to the Grand Canyon on our honeymoon (35 years ago) and stopped at Meteor Crater on the way home because of all the signs advertising it on the highway. We still laugh about it--it was the only place we stopped that we had to pay to get in--and it sounds like it hasn't changed. Unless you have an interest in it--it was just a big hole in the ground to us too.

What a waste of time! When I visited it, I was on a cross country bicycle ride (LA-Boston), a charity fund-raiser. On a day that was already about 90 miles, 4 of us rode the extra 6 miles from the interstate to the crater. The area is all fenced off, so the only way to see it is to pay up. Oh, they had some exhibits like space suits, etc., but overall a long way to go to look at a big hole in the ground from really quite a distance. 12 extra miles of hot desert bicycling! We had each recently watched the movie "Starman", so we did enjoy stopping at the same diner as Bridges did in that move just before he got to the crater.

Thanks for the replies. We will skip it - we've got enough to do!!

We went to Meteor Crater last summer - my 10 year old had read about it in a book and begged us to go there. I was a bit nervous about it, having read all the negative posts, but gave in and went - never hurts to form your own opinion. We were pleasantly surprised with the rim walk, movie and exhibits. Yes, it's a bit cheesy compared to Nat'l parks, but my son really enjoyed it. Yes, it's a big hole in the ground, but when you stop to think about how the hole was created, it's very cool. Not to change your mind, but I wanted to let you know we had a GOOD experience there.
