Mens clothes shops in New York
 

We are travelling to NYC for Thanksgiving and I was wondering if anyone can recommend some good mens clothes shops, I'm looking for some smart ( Business) casual gear that I can never get in my size in Europe ( long legs and wide chest and shoulders )
Are my best bets stores like Brooks brothers and Barneys/Bloomies.
How are they for the bigger sizes.
Gant 5th ave has been good for jeans and shirts. Has anyone any other suggestions.

P.S. Any must see stores for my wife, we have been to all the usual ( touristy ) suspects on previous visits.

The stores you mentioned should be good, depending on how large the size you are talking about. You might want to check out Rochester Big & Tall--an excellent store, and many top designers make big and tall sizes especially for these stores that Barneys, etc. won't have.

Rochester big &amp; tall is an excellent suggestion but regular prices. My friend who's 6'3&quot; has excellent luck at Sym's a <b>discount</b> place on 54th just off Park Ave (betw Park &amp; Madison). They also have women's clothes.:S- I think Barney's may be a waste of time for you. Brooks Brothers used to have wide cuts on their private label stuff-don't know if they still do.

For your wife-for discount clothes try Daffys (several locations-one near Bloomies on 58th). Century 21 all the way downtown near WTC site is another great discount place.

Century 21 is a MUST for both of you.

Century 21 is a very good store, great prices, it's just hit or miss as to what you'll find there. Also, can be a zoo. Daffy's is very good for women's clothing.

I not sure if I'm in the Rochester Big and Tall league, ( 6'4&quot;+ and 240ish pounds )are'nt they more 6'6&quot; up and heavier.
I seem to fall between the max in normal shops and the minimum in the outsize shops.
If I do get the correct leg length and chest in a suit, the waist or leg width is usually huge. (Bought one such suit in Century 21 )
Casual isn't usually a problem, most US stores carry 38&quot; waist 36&quot; leg jeans and XXL/XXXL shirts, its in the more dressy clothes I have a problem getting the right mix.

6'4 and 240, Rochester should have plenty of stuff in your range. &quot;Tall&quot; probably starts at 6'2 or so, it should be very good for you.

My husband has the same problem and if you find a solution, let me know.

He cannot buy suits off the rack because he wears a 50 or 52 jacket and the pants will come in a 40 inch waist. You cannot tailor a 40 inch pant down to a 35.

He has had some luck in a store in Atlanta where a lot of the professional athletes shop. We still haven't found anything similiar in NYC short of having a custom suit made.

Forgot to add, forget about Brooks Brothers. We've had zero luck. At one time, they did not make a double XL.

Barney's is my favorite men's clothing store, and the service/tailoring is second to none.
The Barney's pre-holiday sale (50-80% off outgoing seasonal merchandise) starts 11/20/03. I think it ends before Thanksgiving though.

Brooks Brothers has drifted far downmarket over the past 10 years.
Bloomingdale's is hit and miss, but is long on volume of merchandise. Of course there's Macy's (the world's largest department store) but service and selection in the men's department, while decent, aren't spectacular.

Actually, I wear suits with a 12&quot; drop (from chest to waist) and have had great luck with Brooks Brothers' separates. Podge says he's looking for business casual, so I'm not sure why we're discussing suits, but I bet he'd do just fine at B.B.

Bergdorf for Men, across Fifth Ave from the BG department store, would also be a good choice. The salespeople are the best and obviously deal only with mens clothing.

I'll try all your suggestions if I get time. ( so much to see and do in 5 days )
So far I've enjoyed NY every time I've visited. It's easily my favourite city.
