Memphis the musical

Taking my DD(21) to NY for a few days...want to see a show or two...looking at Memphis the musical or Wicked...for the same price we can get good seats for Memphis or partial view for Wicked...She wants something light and fun...I was going to wait till we arrived and go to the half price ticket booth but have read that for a Wednesday Matinee they are sold the day before...We arrive on a Wednesday morning and would like to see a matinee that afternoon...any advice...we are open to suggestions on other shows as well.

I would never go to a show and sit in partial view seats--I'd be annoyed through the whole show--but others may feel differently.

A friend of mine just saw Memphis and she thought it was great!

Discount tickets are available for Memphis. Check out broadwaybox.com and playbill.com for the offers.

ok so talked to DD again and gave her the choices and she said she really wants to see Momma Mia...maybe will do Memphis for our second show...any thoughts?

HowardR Jun 15th, 2011 02:53 AM

Mamma Mia is also available on discount at those websites.

Just to be clear, your information about matinee tickets is incorrect.

Tickets are sold the day before for matinees only at the South Street Seaport and in Brooklyn. The TKTS booth in Times Square opens at 11 (I believe) and sells same-day matinee tickets.

But you could get better seats by using a discount and buying in advance through Broadway Box. Look at Playbill.com for the latest discounts.

Thank you Doug...2 tickets to Mamma Mia purchased from Playbill...row H seats 6&8..They are emailing them to me today...We will look into a second show when we get there...now to plan the rest...lots to do in NY and not enough time to do it in!

Memphis the Musical is a FABULOUS show, but it is not "fun" if that is what your daughter wants. It is funny at times, dramatic at times, sad at times, but wonderful ALL the time. Just thought you should know in case that makes a difference!

jannieween Jun 15th, 2011 09:52 AM

Thank you hmcrn...we may consider it for Friday night..We have tickets to Cirque on Thursday night while there...time is getting booked up...Sounds like Memphis is more my kind of show but this is her graduation trip so I am just tagging along.

Have seen Memphis twice....great both times.

mclaurie Jun 16th, 2011 12:30 PM

I'll repeat what hmcrn says; Memphis is not all light and fun throughout the show. It's got a story line involving racism and there's some violence that can be upsetting. I'd recommend How To Succeed as another idea and also available on discount from the left column of broadwaybox.com If you print off the offer and bring it with you, you can avoid the transaction fees required when you buy online or by phone. Brong the offer directly to the theater box office when you arrive in NYC.

Okay, I have to say it. It's not "fun" in the sense you're dancing or frolicking around at any particular time in the show, but generally speaking few if any Broadway shows are like that. However, the overall experience of Memphis when all is said and done IS fun.

It's a fantastic show with great music, great performers, and a great story.

jannieween Jun 16th, 2011 02:51 PM

Thanks everyone and mclaurie I will print off the offer and bring it with us and make it our friday night show if we can get good seats.

HowardR Jun 16th, 2011 04:29 PM

I'd recommend you take the discount offer to the How to Succeed box office as soon as possible after your arrival. The show is fairly popular....and weekend performances are the more popular ones.

I liked Mamma Mia a lot. We saw Rock of Ages and it was great! A 'fun show'. A 21 year old may, or may not, know a lot of the songs in the show, which are all 80's rock, big hair, etc. I've been wanting to see Memphis myself, but for 'fun', I'd recommend MM or R of A.
