Memphis- Best Barbecue?

Have opportunity to spend a day in Memphis and would like suggestion for best
Barbecue restaurant.
Also, would appreciate any ideas on what to do for an afternoon.
Not interested in Graceland.
Thanks,
Annie

Sort of like asking which of my kids I like the best.
Ask a local where they go for BBQ.
If not Graceland, how about SUN Records?
Hope it does not still smell from the spring flood.

You could probably ask 10 people and get 10 different answers!

Memphis smells just like any other large city in the U. S. The spring floods did not affect any areas of the city that tourists frequent.

You should visit Gibson Guitar, Sun Studios and Stax.

I know you want to visit Memphis for some BBQ and sightseeing. Walk around Beale St. and visit the joints. Go in B B King's and Dyer's Burgers. Walk around inside The Peabody Hotel for a drink maybe and then The Rendevous for some BBQ across the street from The PB. Go to Automatic Slims for drinks and bar food, Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken and South of Beale for good bar dining.

Automatic Slim's @ 83 South 2nd St., Memphis, TN 901 - 525 - 7948.

Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken @ 310 South Front St., Memphis, TN 901 - 527 - 4877.

South of Beale @ 361 South Main St., Memphis, TN 901 - 526 - 0388.

The BBQ Shop and One and Only are my favorites but Payne's is famous for their pulled pork sandwich.

I live here and recommend either Germantown Commissary or Corkys. People also love Neelys but I have never actually been there. Don't buy into the Rendezvous hype, I think their food is awful

As far as spending the afternoon, I assume you'll be downtown? You could do lots of things:

Sun Studios
National Civil Rights Museum
Rock N Soul Museum
Mud Island
See the ducks at the Peabody

There are no issues downtown from the flooding

I visited this city last year and put up extensive posts here on my food and attractions experiences. The food report contains many bbq places, while the final trip report on attractions is found at the end of the latter post.

Should maybe mention that my favorite Memphis BBQ places were BBQ Shop and Neely's (the one on Jefferson) from the several I tried.

Thank you all for the tips.
I will check into the BBQ places you suggest.

That's a loaded question in Memphis. Its all good! There are literally dozens of barbeque restaurants in the area and everyone has their favorites. If you are staying downtown, you have Leonards and Rendezvous. Slightly away from downtown, you have Interstate and Neelys. If you go to either of these, make sure you go during the day for safety.

Below are a couple links to add to your confusion.

There are several recent barbeque restaurant reviews on the above site.
