May 2012 Honeymoon

Live in California and getting married in May. Were going to Hawaii in August for our Honeymoon but we want to take 5 days or so and do something in the mountain areas. I want the mountains, lakes, rivers, falls and all that stuff. What states in May would fit that bill other then California. It seems Montana and Wyoming are still in the late stages of winter so I am hoping you all have some ideas. Yosemite is always available but prefer to leave this state for this time away. Maybe Colorado or Utah. We would fly into the area, rent car and stay in a lodge. We enjoy hiking and scenic roads. Thank you all.

Middle/Northern Colorado and Utah has the same problem -- it is still winter or at best early Spring. It will be cool, lots of snow, and limited access to the higher mountains.

Zion National Park and the consistently highly rated hotel: Desert Pearl Inn http://www.desertpearl.com/

fmpden is right, anything further north could very well still be covered in snow. But Zion in May is wonderful. The leaves are out, the air is just right, the flowers are beginning to bloom. Great time to visit. Visiting in May is when I fell in love with Zion many years ago. And easy 3 hr drive from Las Vegas, you'll have rivers and falls and mountains. No lakes though unless you wanted to visit nearby Sand Hollow Reservoir.

ScottC,

Another UT resident chiming in here - Moab or Zion. May is PERFECT for either. Some of the best scenery and hiking in the world.

Just don't go anywhere near Zion over Memorial Day weekend!

I am sorry but ,,,,,

over the spine of the rockies in 15-20 minutes awesome

hiking vistas........

you cannot do that in May. Personally believe that Estes Park is not the best choice in May.

I wouldn't call Moab or Zion mountainous. I'm not saying it wouldn't be an excellent place to visit. I do love these areas and May would be a good time to visit, but we're talking high desert, canyons, sandstone monoliths, arches, etc and not mountains. Plenty to do and see. If you find a waterfall it will more than likely be because it just rained. May can start getting warm in these areas...which might be a good thing.

I'm not sure why Yosemite isn't on the top of your list if you want mountains. Beautiful mountain setting, plenty of mountain hiking and the waterfalls are pretty much at their peak by May.
