maximum weight for a suitcase?
 

We're flying from Europe to the USA with AA. Does someone knows what the maximum allowed weight for one suitcase is?

A discussion about checking bags on the Airlines forum a few days ago said the weight limit was 50 pounds.

For this type of factual information, it's always better to check with the most authoritative possible source. In this case, it's AA's own web site, which says:

"Effective June 1, 2004, the maximum weight for all bags checked to/through/from any destination in Europe or Asia will be 70lbs/32kgs. "

AA's web site (above) says that the weight limit for domestic flights is 50 pounds, and for flights to/from Europe is 70 pounds. So I guess if dwoodliff is right, you must also have some connections within the US?

The maximum weight is indeed 70 lbs. But if your bag weighs over 50 lbs, you will pay an extra fee. Here in the US, it is $25 per bag. AA has signs posted in the terminals at DFW (my local airport) with the fee schedule!

If your whole journey is on one itinerary on AA, then the 70lb rule will apply to all flights. Doesn't matter you'll have domestic connections.

I am just curious - how could one possibly need 70 pounds (or even 50 pounds) of stuff for a vacation? Please understand, that I do not care if you bring 50 tons, as long as I don't have to carry it - but even if you remember the thread on how many pairs of shoes we women need, it would be tough to come up with 70 pounds for one person.

You have obviously never met my beau - he packs as if he needs at least 3 changes of clothes per day - including a heavy terry bathrobe (no matter that the hotels supply them - they're "not thick enough").

I usually do all the packing to minimize this - but ocassionally time just doesn;t allow and he does his own - and it's like traveling with Elizabeth Taylor.

On our last trip overseas to the Philippines we had not one 70lb luggage per person but three (there was a promotion on the airline)! There were three of us flying so we had a total of 630 lbs between us. It is not just our luggage but mostly gifts and supplies that can only be bought over here (or are cheaper). Everything from vitamins to candy to cordless phones has been inside on one trip. I would assume that people with family overseas do the same.

It's always amazing to me when I finish packing and see the mountain of suitcases that result. We have two huge, gigantic suitcases that our family of 4 filled for a recent cruise (plus a couple smaller suitcases)--we call them the Mother Ships and can't help laughing when they WHUMP onto the conveyor belt at airport luggage pickup.

By the way, one was overweight by 5 or so pounds and Frontier checked it through without a word...

I can easily top 70 pounds when coming from overseas.

It's the dried squid from Asia - so much better tasting than the stuff we get here.

The other item that adds to the overall weight are the free hotel slippers. I use those (still in their packaging) to line the suitcase in areas where there are more fragile items. Their hard, rubberized soles make for a perfect lightweight padding!

Anyone need a free pair of hotel slippers? :D

Oh yes, what do I wear while at the hotel? A pair of free slippers from the last trip - natch! These are junked at trip end. Those used slippers must be junked at tripend or the luggage will exceed the 70 pound weight limit. :)

Ah Easytraveler, you understand! We line the sides of our boxes with pantyhose--the cardboard packages allow that little bit of extra padding without adding too much weight.

I can go to Europe for 10 days with a carryon bag.
