Maximum # of checked luggage
I'm brainstorming about how to get daughter #5 from College Station TX. to WI without having to drive 20 hours each way to get her. She's in college and will be transferring back here. I know that there will be an extra charge for anything more than one suitcase, but is there a maximum # that you can check? I'm thinking that this might be less expensive than shipping things UPS or something like that. There's no furniture, just "stuff."

Hello coldkelly :)
Not knowing your airline, it is difficult to know exactly. Here is the information from American Airlines' website: $15 for the first checked piece for tickets purchased on or after June 15, 2008 Exceptions may apply. $25 for the second checked piece for tickets purchased on or after May 12, 2008. Exceptions may apply. $100 per piece for the 3rd, 4th and 5th checked bags. $200 per piece for the 6th checked bag and any additional pieces. |
AA, for example, has no limit. If you pay them they'll take it.
This is info from AA for checked bags, mas 40lb each. 1st bag $15 2nd bag $25 $100 per piece for the 3rd, 4th and 5th checked bags $200 per piece for the 6th checked bag and any additional pieces Charges for UPS (ground) are $32 for a 40# box, $78 for 100#. |
Thanks for the info. UPS is cheaper than I thought. When I sent a sleeping bag and other bedding to camp in Vermont last year by UPS, it must not have been ground! I think I paid more to ship the items than what they were worth

UPS Ground is probably the cheapest way to get most of her stuff back home, plus they'll pick it up and she doesn't have to deal with getting it to the airport (and then home from the airport in WI).
But USPS Media Mail is a very economical way to ship eligible items, including books, CDs, DVDs, etc. ($10.63 to ship 25 pounds; $15.88 for 40 pounds). |
I would definitely do the UPS thing. That way - she can pack up the stuff and send it on before she actually leaves.....keeping only the stuff she needs to take on the plane. The UPS stuff should be there before she arrives.
