Mauna Kea Resort, Big Island

Anybody been to the Mauna Kea Resort within the last year? Impressions?

My husband and I were there for four nights in early November. The hotel is a bit older, but has lots of character. It's like staying in a grand hotel from the 50s era - nothing modern and flashy, but very stately and Rockefeller-esque. The staff is outstanding - very friendly and ready to cater to every need. The beach is nice, with towels and lounge chairs and a beachfront cafe/bar where you can order drinks. There is a Saturday night clambake on the beach which is extremely expensive but really yummy (all the lobsters and crab legs you can possibly eat). The cafe is also very good (didn't try the formal restaurant).

Let me know if you have any specific questions. Oh, you also get reciprocal privileges at the Hapuna Prince, which is the next bay over. We didn't go over there, but hear it's nice. The golf is also supposed to be good.

Was your room air-conditioned?

Yes, the room was air conditioned, but we didn't really need it. We spent most nights with the sliding door open so we could hear the ocean. In fact, I think we turned the heat up a few times on chillier days...
