Maui Weather in January
We're taking a late January trip to Maui for my birthday. Wondered what area would be likely to have the best weather (as in not continual rain and wind)?
|
The area that will probably have the best weather will be South Maui, meaning Kihei, Wailea and Makena. The wind can kick up pretty good in the afternoon in Makena and Wailea, but it is usually welcome. Love the trade winds. :)
Nowhere on Maui will have "continual rain and wind". |
We are in South Kihei every Jan. - Feb. The ocean will be calmer off South Maui than West Maui, but you should be OK weather-wise from Kahana on south. I would not book Kapalua or Napili as they are farthest north, but you can never tell -- could be lovely up there (and you'd probably get a great rate at the Ritz Carlton because it *is* winter.)
If you plan to tour Iao Valley, Haleakala, Road to Hana, those are more convenient from South Maui -- OGG too. Nice birthday present! |
The glorious beaches of Hana can be unswimable in the winter months but the area, the flora, the fauna, the hiking can be unmeasurable.

Thanks for the replies, sorry for not responding earlier.

January is High Season in Hawaii. The usual 'snowbirds' are there, and they are joined by the whale watchers. Get your reservations for lodging and rental car pinned down ASAP.
BTW, although it's winter, don't think you'll be fine without A/C. Some places don't offer it because electrical rates in Hawaii are sky-high. |
