Maui vs Kauai

Which island whould you suggest we spend more time on. We're going for 12 days in Sep and are staying at the Grand Wailea in Maui and The Hyatt in Kauai.

Maui is more "developed" and offers more to see and do, so the usual suggestion is to spend more time on Maui. However, the Kauai Hyatt is a great hotel and if you're interested in hiking, kayaking or just relaxing poolside, more time could be devoted to Kauai. My personal preference wuold be 7 days-Maui and 5 days-Kauai. Enjoy!

It's funny because I have the same dilemma. We have a convention to go to on Oahu (of all places in HI why Oahu?) May 18 2001, and I have about 8 or 9 days prior to that to figure out what to do on some other island. Should I split the time between Kauai and Maui or just stay on Kauai? i feel like 8 days on Kauai would be too long for my husband who gets antsy. I want to do some scuba diving-any place better than the other between Maui or Kauai? Is 3 islands in 14 days too much? Thanks for your advice.

Hey Ramona:
Don't sell Oahu short so quickly. While most people will suggest that you spend most of your time on K, M and BI, IF you're 'stuck' on Oahu you'll find that the island, away from Honolulu is strikingly beautiful and unspoiled. It offers many of the same features as Maui. Just thought I'd mention this because if you have to spend at least a few days there for a convention, there are still lots of ways to enjoy your stay there on Oahu...but get out of Honolulu.

We did this exact vacation last year and spent 6 days at the Grand Wailea and 4 at the Hyatt Kauai. It was a good amount of time at both and we really enjoyed both resorts. We liked going to the Hyatt as our last stop since it was a little more low key after all our activities in Maui. If you need any other info let me know.

I have been to both islands several times and they are both great. Maui has the edge if you are mainly interested in beautiful beaches and snorkeling. Those who prefer hiking and "sightseeing" will find more in Kauai. I've scuba dove in both, but only a few dives (very expensive!) and had great experiences at both, especially Molokini (from Maui) and Sheraton Caverns (Kauai). Maui has more restaurants and nightlife, but the crowds to match. I'm not familiar with the Grand Wailea, but stayed at The Hyatt before buying a share of a condo in the same area. The problem with the Hyatt is that it is so nice you may be content to spend your whole vacation on its grounds and not get out and enjoy the rest of the island.
