Maui trip report 2/10-2/16
Received so much good info from the Forum before we left. Just wanted to give back a little.

Here's a summary with brief impressions:

Maui Ocean Center - an informative preview for snorkeling.

Snorkeling at Black Rock, Ulua Bay, Ahihi Bay, with Trilogy on Lanai - Ahihi Bay was the best site. The water was clearest and marine life was most abundant and diverse there.

EcoAdventure Kahakalua-Nakalele Fusion Tour - Interesting but perhaps not worth the cost.

Snorkeling with Ann Fielding - One of the highlights of our trip. Ann is wonderful.

Trilogy Discover Lanai excursion with mammal hunt add-on. Crew was great. Not enough time on island if you do the add-on. Snorkeling site was not that great but maybe we didn't have enough time to scope it out. Lunch was wonderful. All in all a good trip but again wonder if worth the price.

Haleakala - another highlight.

Kula Botanical Gardens, Tedeshi Vineyards - did not have much time to spend at either of these places, but they were both pleasant.

We ate at the Hula Grill, Sunrise Cafe, Sam Choy's Lahaina (twice), Cinnamon Fair, Cafe 808, Haliimaile General Store. One word of caution - we went to Kula Lodge one evening for dinner. We were told that they had just changed chefs and menus. While we were expecting to pay around $25 for dinner, we found that the sampler, which happened to be the one item that appealed to almost all of us, was $40.

Stayed at Lahaina Shores and Kili's Cottage in Kula. Lahaina Shores was very nice. Kili's Cottage was wonderful. It was so well-taken care of. Clean and beautiful. Three bedrooms, two baths. Every amenity you can think of. Hospitality is overwhelming. If you are going to Haleakala, Kili's Cottage is highly recommended.

Hope some of this info is useful to you.

I don't get all this excitement about Maui Zowie. Are you folks talking vacations or drug fog-outs?
And if you're talking vacation (and the thesame goes for Kaui [?}) if all you boring middle class people head for the islands I sure know where I don't want to be caught! YAWN!
|
Gayle,

Thank you for coming back and telling us how it was. Do you mind my asking what you paid at Kili's Cottage, and was there a pool or jacuzzi on the property?

Were you glad that you stayed at Lahaina Shores, and did you find it convenient to the things you wanted to do most? Also, what did you think of Hailemaile General Store? We were there at lunch, and just a little disappointed. Wondered if we got a different chef than the one that does all the dinners that are raved about.

Thanks again for your report!

Thomas whoever you are, Obviously you've never been to Hawaii & I'm glad you won't be there to spoil it for the rest of us! With an attitude like that you're better off away from humanity!
Gayle, thanks for an informative trip report! Too bad losers visiting this board have to spoil it.

Dear Loser:
The boring middle classes strike again (remember they're the ones who ELECTED Hitler to office because they thought by doing so would preserve their creature comforts.) I bet you vote Republicana, too. But remember: three strikes and you're out. And strike thre might just be a BIG DEPRESSION! Om-mani-padme-hum!

Thomas, how did you sneak by the guards again and access the computer?
Now take your medicine and go back and rock at your bedside for awhile and things will be all better.
Sweet dreams.

Air fare and rooms were a package deal so I'm afraid I don't know how much we paid for Kili's Cottage. I did find a website (www.bestbnb.com), though, and there it says $95 single or double occupancy plus $10 for each extra person.

As far as Lahaina Shores, not having stayed at a bed and breakfast or at Kaanipali or Kapalua, I really have no basis for comparison. It was nice as far as motel rooms in general. It was clean, personnel was friendly and helpful, parking was not a hassle, we had an ocean view, the kitchenette came in handy. It is right on the beach, and it does have both a pool and Jaccuzi. It's on one end of Front Street (the main street in Lahaina), and we did find the location convenient. It's right next to 505 Front Street, one of the shopping complexes. Trilogy took off from Lahaina Harbor, which is a few blocks from Lahaina Shores. We were also just a few blocks from the public tennis courts, which we used a couple of times while we were there. We did enjoy being able to go out and just browse in the shops in the evenings. All in all, yes, I'm glad we stayed at Lahaina Shores, but again I've never stayed in one of the resort areas so have no basis for comparison there.

We too were disappointed with the General Store.

Thomas, it sounds as if you would prefer the more slummy environs of the Caribbean!! Good luck there -- and kindly stay away from Hawaii altogether as it's much too classy for the bohemian type person that you obviously are!!
