Maui - time to kill Kahului airport
Since so many of you are so familiar with, and knowledgeable about, Maui, I'm hoping you might help with some time we have to kill. My son and I arrive 3 hours before my husband at Kahului airport. Would we have enough time to visit someplace nearby after picking up our Alamo rental car or would traffic, etc.(3:15 arrival) keep us from from wanting to stray ? It's our first trip to the island and it will be very difficult to just hang around an airport. Would Makawao be realistic? or a pretty beach with a snack shack or something nearby? Suggestions please. Thanks!

Makawao is kind of impractical. The afternoon traffic on Hana Highway is kind of slow, and I would think that, by the time you get the car and get up there, you would have relatively little time to spend.
You could go to Baldwin Beach (no grinds there) or into Pa`ia, but I have an even better idea: You could scoot down the street from the airport and go shopping for groceries and sundries then run back up and grab him. The airport is small, and it is very close to Costco, KMart, the "other" megamart, and an short ways further to go to Safeway or Star Market. (I suggest Safeway). Since the airport is small, have him call you when he deplanes and by the time you checkout and drive back to the airport, he'll be waiting curbside for your to pick him up, and you will have already done the shopping!

There is a beach right by the airport past the rental car area, I think. You don't have to get out on the main road. My husband and I hung out there for an hour before our flight and said our last goodbyes to the island. Drank all the left over beer, gave our beach pads and cooler away to some needy soul just arriving. It is the best place on the island to kite surf and it was very cool to watch.

Be aware that Kanaha Beach is one of those areas where car break-ins tend occur more frequently. A vehicle barricade was put in this past winter to allow revegetation of the beach are, but it means you have to park and walk further. Thieves know this and they know that people come here on their way to and from the airport and they target windsurfers.
I don't want to make it sound as though crime is rampant, just that should be aware of your suroundings and if you do choose to go to any beach from the airport, keep an eye on your vehicle. It would suck if you had your bags stolen on your firts day.
