Maui this summer
 

Should I be worried about our trip to Maui this summer? All of this earthquake/tsunami news in the region has me wondering if I should cancel our trip. Does Maui ever experience earthquakes? I am not comfortable with going to higher floors as water pours in or traveling on dark roads to get to higher ground in the middle of the night.

Yes, Maui sometimes experiences earthquakes...just like California, Alaska, Washington, etc. You cannot predict when or where an earthquake will strike.

In the case of a tsunami caused by earthquakes outside the immediate region, you will have warning of evacuation beforehand. In the case of the most recent occurrence, they had hours notice before the first tsunami waves were projected to come to shore.

Earthquakes and tsunamis can happen in both daytime and nighttime.

There's absolutely no reason to cancel your trip for the summer unless you NEVER want to go somewhere with the potential for natural disaster. But of course since natural disaster comes in many different shapes/forms, you'd be eliminating a good portion of the world.

The island needs your business badly at this point. Maui was in the midst of an economic recovery when this happened. High occupancy rates, ec. There is no good reason to cancel. Take a deep breath, relax and start looking forward to your trip again.

The risk of a tsunami is very low. You are at a greater risk swimming in the ocean. But that doesn't deter traveler's!

You are no more likely to experience a disaster in Maui than you are by staying in your own home town. But if you want extra security from any tsunami worries, you can stay in one of the many excellent condos that are on hills by the ocean. Many of them are on hills that would be too high for tsunami water to reach.
