Maui Sunsets
I will be honeymooning in Maui in January and I was looking for some suggestions on good restaurants to watch the sunset, or a good place to enjoy a cocktail during the sunset. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

You might consider substituting the food and ((d))drink with a "high altitude experience" by viewing a sunset or sunrise atop ((#))Haleakala((S))

We had a great time at the Barefoot Bar at the Hula Grill at Whalers Village in Kaanapali. They have terrific music and you are right there in the sand. Great view of the sun setting behind Lanai.

Here are some suggestions from an early post.
Message: The Banyan Tree at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua. Looks onto the beautiful blue Kapalua Bay-sunsets are incredible as you sip a Kapalua Romance cocktail!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Author: ReginaFilange Date: 04/10/2003, 03:01 pm Message: Looks wonderful!! http://kapaluamaui.com/activities/di...anyantree.html I added it to my "must do" list. Thank you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Author: riggsie Date: 04/10/2003, 03:13 pm Message: Hi - I have great memories of sitting on the patio bar at THE SHERATON Kaanapali beach and watching the diver -dive off Black Rock at sunset. Just beautiful! You can take great pictures. The diver will even let you take his picture. There is also a small band playing while a beautiful hawaiian girl does a hula dance at the bar which starts about an hour before sunset. We were staying at the Sheraton at the time but many people that were at the bar werent. So it doesnt matter if you are a guest or not to listen to band and watch the diver. Dont miss it! |
The Bay Club at Kapalua Bay Hotel - amazing sunset over Molokai!
Feast at Lele - watching the dancers perform on a waterfront stage with the sun setting in the background. From our lanai... |
Definitely take a Trilogy Tours catamaran sunset sail to Lanai. We did and they acknowledged our 10th anniversary, give you snacks, a nice deli lunch, tour of the island of Lanai, snorkeling, a BBQ din-din, and a champagne sunset sail back from Lanai. We went and they through in a free Spinner Dolphin tour, which was AWESOME! See their website at: http://www.sailtrilogy.com/. Our favorite was the outside dining at the Aston Kaanapali Shores restaruant. Decent prices for Maui, great food and a great view, just steps from a great beach. Also had a great view from Hecocks in Lahaina, and with the window seat at the right timing, you get not only a GREAT sunset, but get to watch a FREE Luau!! HA!! And the drinks are not watered down!!

We dined at I'o in Lahaina the last time we were in Maui. (Believe it's on Front Street). Sat on the patio and watched the sun set- it was really beautiful. The food and service here are just wonderful... and the proximity to the beach and the sunset make it that much nicer. Be sure to call for a reservation if you want to sit outside!

Your description of the Trilogy Sail interested me so I checked out the website. It looks good. How many people were on the trip approx - did you find it crowded? How far ahead did you book? Cheers, Lin |

Great trip, the Trilogy. There were two Catamran's that went over together. No more than 20 people on each. Nice number for some personal attention. The flying fish, Spinner Dolphins and Octopus (yes, I got sucked into a 35 min dive for $65.00) were awesome. Perfect sunset that evening. Since it is such a treat and a bit spendy, save it until you have 1-2 evenings left. They won't let you dive if you fly out that evening. Classy company, which is why they don't advertise in all the coupon books. We booked 2-3 months in advance, because we are anal about those things, and besides, FODORS recommended doing so!!! Good luck. Aloha! |
Reply to BCarvalho, I have read that the snorkeling can be variable off Lanai because of murky water, how was your Trilogy snorkeling experience in Lanai with regard to variety of fish underwater? Was it better than snorkeling off Maui or at Molokini in your experience? :?
Mahalo in advance for your response. |
Is it a comfortable walk to The Sheraton from Aston Kaanapali Shores along the beach? The month would April. Thanks very much.

JohnD,
I am a very accomplished swimmer and snorkeler, so I always go a bit further out and about than the average schmoe. At Lanai the water was a bit murky, close in. Further out it was excellent. Variety of fish, clarity of water and number of turles was best at Kaanpali 1/2 in between the Kaanapli Shores, where we stayed, and Black Rock. It was way better than Black Rock, Napili Bay, The Coral Gardens and DT Baldwin Park. Second best for me was at DT Baldwin Beach beyond the breakers and north around the point. Both of my top spots were void of people totally, which I like. I did see 2 or more turtles at each location!! PS. How do you insert those scrunched faces? Is that a cut and paste? Thanks. |
Orchid,
Walking from the Kaanapali (not Kaanapli)Shores to the Sheraton is a bit of a hoof. Probably a good 1/2 mile? I walked from the Shores in August to where the Westin is putting in a new property (1/2 way)and I had to cross two-three properties and then walk along a beach front lined with trees. This area is actually a park, and like many others, it isn't marked, you just kind of have to look for the entrance as you drive from AKS to Kaanapali. I wouldn't walk to the Sheraton from the AKS, but would definitely recommend snorkeling off of that new property area. It is best to drive to one of the other properties and have lunch or whatever, there and they will validate your parking ticket, so there is no charge |
Reply to BCarvalho,
Mahalo for your perspective on snorkeling off of Lanai/Maui!=D> The "smiley faces" or "emoticons" can be viewed at website: http://www.fodors.com/forums/smileys The smileys only work on fodors website and you have to type in the characters that represent the smileys. For example, for a ((R))rainbow((R)) you type 2 forward parenthesis i.e.((, the letter R and 2 backward parenthesis i.e.)), use the "preview my reply" option to see it appear correctly before posting. An easy way to figure out the code for the smiley is to put your mouse pointer or arrow over the smiley in someones message and the arrow will reveal the code. :S- |
John D,
Ha! Thanks for the tip. Way cool!((H)). I will book mark that page for later post-its! I give that page ((Y))((Y))!! Mahalo very much. BC |
For the most spectacular sunset on Maui, try Capische for dinner at The Diamond Resort in Wailea. In addition to an amazing sunset view, you will also enjoy one of the best meals on the island.

When we were a little younger, we stayed in the Kihei area and experienced an incredible sunset at one of the Kamaole Beach Parks. There were very few people and we just sat for a bout 45 minutes prior to sunset and sat for quite a while after reveling in the warm trade winds, the sound of the waves lapping the lava, the latent smells of plumeria and ginger, the sand under us and the resonant orange/pink hues just barely visable. Oh my god! I love Hawaii!!!!
