Anna, I am sorry I did not address you question yesterday.
All of the beaches on Maui are public property and public access is required. Many of our beaches are deisgnated as parks and you will find ample parking for these. For others look for the "Beach Access" signs posted between properties and use this route to access the beach.
As for other places that might be off-limits, you will clearly see posted signs, most going so far as to explain why it is posted as such. Also, I'd suggest you consider things like such as where you are parking or the route you are taking to access a site. For instance, the trail to Kaihalulu (Red Sand) Beach in Hana runs adjacent to a Buddhist cemetary. It is extremely disrespectful to trespass in the cemetary. Also be aware of your surroundings, respect the sea, and know that flash flooding can occur at any time in mountain streams and pools. Even if it is sunny and clear where you are, the streams are fed from high on Haleakala and it is not uncommon for water levels to rise swiftly and dramatically, sweeping people away with it.
We want you to enjoy your visit here and live to return again and again. Maui has so many wonderful local, state and national park lands, with endless trails and waterfalls and swimming areas, that you can easily forego the controversial sights and still have a truly wonderful, safe and memorable visit.
Malama pono.
