I much prefer the drive around West Maui to the road to Hana. It's prettier, IMHO, amd more primitive with more spectacular ocean views although you don't have the waterfalls. The road becomes one lane for a stretch and if you meet another car, one of you has to back up. The small villages seemed much more "real". I am a middle-aged woman and I wasn't nervous. For nervous, do the mule ride down the cliffs on Molokai!! Enjoy.
