Maui Pools
 

Okay- this may see like a strange question- but I love pools and love 'checking' out pools at great resorts. Did anyone 'pool hop' during their vacation in Maui? Are the big resorts strict about keeping track of guests vs. non-guests at resorts? I plan to spend money on snacks/drinks.

As far as I know, the only pool you wouldn't be able to get into if you aren't a guest is the Grand Wailea. The give their guests wristbands, and they are diligent about checking for them. If you want to use their pools without staying there, they charge a hefty fee.

i can definitely tell you there's no way the westin maui can keep track of who's a hotel guest or not. why? there are hotels along that beach with a walkway between the hotels and the beach and constant people traffic. who knows who's staying where..??
you should pool hop there..they have 4 or 5 pools. one with a big slide and another with waterfalls and little nook like a cave.

Was just there a two weeks ago and the Marriott guests had wrist bands on.

When we were on Maui we were told at every hotel/resort that they officially do not allow any non-guests to use their pools. The Hyatt Maui did allow us to pay 200.00(cash) for our family of 4 to use the pool, but this was under the table(paid to one of the pool attendants),. You can't really easily sneak in because most of the resorts require wrist-bands, and obviously we wouldn't have wanted to do that with kids.

The last time this question was asked it caused alot of scuttle. Let me put it this way. If you were paying $300 a night to stay at a Maui hotel would it bother you if non hotel guests came and used the lawn chairs?

must be a new thing for the westin maui then. we were there for 10 days in october 2000 and there were no such things as wrist bands.

I remember seeing wristbands at the Sheraton, although we did use the pool "illegally." (We were staying at the decidedly not-as-nice KBH next door.) I was terrified the entire time and didn't enjoy myself :)

We had wrist bands for the pool at the Marriott Ocean Club.

Years ago we went to Maui with friends and stayed in a condo. Husband always wanted to go to the Hyatt pool so we snuck in. Didn't take long for us to get kicked out. This was 20 years ago. We've stayed there a couple of times since and it's still a great hotel. Staying there you are glad they limit use to just the hotel guests.

If the hotel doesn't require wrist bands they will check on anyone who doesn't have the hotel pool towels. Now that so many people leave towels around to "save" the lounge chairs for themselves I'm sure that a creative nonguest could just swipe one of those and stay the whole day. One thing is that you will not be able to go down any slide without a wristband. They always check for that before they allow you to go down the slide. (hyatt included)

a slight correction from my husband who used the slide. he said that for the slide he needed a wrist band (i never used the slide). but no wrist bands to use the pools. at least in 2000.

Shelby1 sad but true and dlai sounds like some pool attendant made a quick buck. Higher end pools usually charge that much for non-guests to join. He probably just pocketed what the hotel would have charged you. Maybenot.

I think the wrist bands are more for local kids that crash the pool. In my experience this is usually a measure to protect pools with attractions such as water slides. I have been to wide open pools where no one is swimming because it is 70 degrees outside, burrr. But this could have changed on Maui in the last few years.

When I lived in Hawaii WE FREQUENTLY POOL HOPPED. I can remember backstroking under the stars at the Marriott in Lihue. GREAT MEMORY. I don't recall many people taking time out of their vaction to do this. I don't recall seeing this when we stayed at the Hyatt. You can spot the pool towels and where there are restrictions there are also requirements when you pick up the towels.

I've got to say when I was at the Hyatt last March/April there was a day when these 3 VERY large,loud, hairy slightly over middle aged men crashed the pool. They were probably looped and it sisn't take long before they were escorted back to the walkway. The biggest clue as to their not being Hyatt guests were the free refill mugs they were carrying from the Marriott! I just could not believe these guys, what were they thinking? I assume they didn't realize the pool for guests only rule or maybe they were so drunk they thought they were at the Marriott! Anyway, had to share that one, Aloha

Gosh I must be a real uptight middle-aged (did I jut admit that?) woman, because it never even occured to me to "crash" a hotel pool! I'd be afraid of being embarassed when I got kicked out.

we just stayed at the four seasons for our honeymoon in sept. and I think you might have a hard time to pool hop there. the attendants greet you upon arrival in the pool area and ask for your room # before setting up towels. Guess you could give a fake one, but their pool isn't particularly outstanding...

Yup Cindy you're uptight!!! Just kidding it is fun to do if you are on the island for 2 or more weeks.

We knew that the pool attendant was going to pocket the 200.00 we gave him to use the pool (that's why it was cash!) but it seemed worth it at the time for our kids to have a day at a fun resort pool. It was still a little nerve-wracking to me because I figured there was still somewhat of a chance we could be kicked out. (We were staying at the Kaanapali Ali'i, which is nice, but has a smallish plain pool.) It's always a challenge for us to find a nice hotel with condo-type amenities plus big resort amenities as well.
