Inakauaidavidababy Yes!!! Team Hana all the way. No, didn't see the local kids hulu, but that would have been great. Thanks for the kind words!

sdunbar5 I would start by cutting out one of the islands and just focus on two for your 3-week trip. 3 in 3 weeks would be too much for me but to each their own.

Re: Maui, we didn't visit Kihei so can't really speak to that, but it looks like a pretty good location to get to other parts of the island if you have a rental car. Other's can probably advise better here...

Restaurants
  • EVERYONE will recommend Mama's Fish House - it was good. Didn't blow my mind and was on the more expensive side, but maybe it was an off night. Most people swear by this place.
  • Hali'maile General Store in upcountry (on way to volcano summit) was one of my favorite meals of the trip. Outstanding.
  • One of my other favorite meals was a pulled pork sandwich from a stand along the Road to Hana. Simple and amazing.
  • We loved Paia Bowls (in Paia) for smoothies, acai bowls in the morning
  • For a splurge, we had a wonderful dinner at Spago (in the Four Seasons)
  • We also had a great dinner at the Old Lahaina Luau. It wasn't family style because of Covid, which I actually liked.
In general though, not to be a party pooper, the food was pretty mediocre and very expensive. Since you are staying in a condo, do not feel like you are missing out if you stock up at the store and grill at your place. Not only is this nice after a day at the beach/hiking, but it will also save you a ton of money.

Covid
We visited in March/April 2021. You had to have a negative test to clear the airport then you were home free. Masks were strict indoors, and rather loose while outside. In order to go to another island, you had to repeat the while process (test within 72 hours in order to clear the airport at the next island). Because of that, we stuck to Maui county, and did Lanai instead of the Big Island like we originally planned. I didn't want the stress of having to test on vacation. The truth is though, things are changing all the time. I believe now you can avoid testing if vaccinated but who knows what the situation will be next March/April. Just stay updated and be flexible. Google Jordan and Erica, Hawaii Vacation Guide -- they have a lot of great travel tips and their monthly newsletter covers Covid Travel Guideline changes - it was very helpful. Also on a covid-related note -- if you plan to rent a car, do it now. There are SERIOUS inventory issues and I don't see that going away any time soon.

Sunrise at Haleakala
Yes, you need tickets. They only go on sale a week early and we found it impossible to secure. We went for sunset instead (no tickets needed) and had a wonderful time. Plus, I think I would prefer driving UP in the daylight and down at night vs the opposite.

Hope that helps!

sdunbar5 ~ You might want to start a new thread of your own. Your question is pretty well hidden here under someone else's topic.

Yes you need sunrise tickets at Haleakala. We went mid-morning because no one wanted to drive in the dark for either sunrise or sunset. It was still phenomenal.

I don't believe there is any testing between islands at this time? But you do need testing from the mainland for your arrival.

Where are you flying into? Where are you flying out of?

Going March/April 2022

You'll need to check on current requirements closer to your time of travel. They have been changing often since the Covid Pandemic began.

Testing has not been required for months for mainland to Hawaii flights, (since early July 2021) for passengers fully vaccinated in the US.
Recommend going to one of the Airline websites and register on the Hawaii State Safe Travels website to stay current.
Governors can impose their own restrictions, so also check the individual County websites.
Also be aware that reservations are required in MANY places to control capacity. One of the spots I plan to visit starts taking reservations 60 days out.

Always a risk in asking here on Fodors. You never know if the respondent has knowledge of the current situation.
Or if they have correctly interpreted what they've Googled.

The Hawaiian Airlines website is handy in that you can enter your departure and arrival airports, but you still need to correctly interpret the rules for your personal situation.
https://www.hawaiianairlines.com/
  1. U.S. domestic travelers who were fully vaccinated in the United States or U.S. territories can bypass quarantine starting the 15th day after the completion of their vaccination.
  2. Bypass quarantine by taking a pre-travel test (paid for by the traveler) and a rapid post-arrival test (paid for by Maui County)
    • The test must be from a state-approved testing provider.
    • The test must be administered no more than 72 hours prior to the scheduled departure time of the final leg to Hawaii.
    • For trans-pacific travel, test results must be received prior to flight departure.
  3. Quarantine: choose not to take a COVID-19 test prior to departure and instead, complete the mandatory 10-day self-quarantine
All trans-pacific travelers must create an account on the State of Hawaii’s Safe Travels website. You will find information on the steps you need to take to bypass quarantine on this page.

Travelers arriving on Maui also need to download the AlohaSafe Alert application or enable their exposure notification setting on their mobile device prior to arrival.
