Maui or Kona for a toddler?
 

My husband & I are planning our trip to Hawaii for Oct & this time will be taking our almost 3yr old. Which would be better for him to play etc? We want a sandy beach right out our door. Thanks

Your choices for a sandy beach in Kona will be minimal. They exist but they are far and few between. Highly recommend Maui.....sandy beaches galore, from Napili Bay to Wailea (and elsewhere).

I agree. Great beaches can be sought out around Kona, but mostly there's not much in the way of hotels on beaches. To have some stellar ones at your doorstep you have to stay in Kohala at one of the resorts. But Maui has nothing but beaches all up and down the west and south areas, with places to stay right on the beach ranging from the cheapest condo to the Four Seasons.

Woops! Sorry to get side-tracked there. Anyway...........Maui has more beaches to a toddlers liking.

The Grand Wailea on Maui has a manmade beach for toddlers - shallow water with sandy "beach" and bottom. It's pretty large and located between the real beach and the pool complex. The multi-level pools have little slides that small children enjoy. But nothing is right outside the door - huge resort! Our daughter is a little afraid of the waves at the real beach so it was ideal for her.

I agree about the Grand Wailea on Maui. If your budget allows, definitely the place to go with toddlers. We just returned from a week with our 20 month old and our 3 year old daughter. The "baby beach" was loved by both. It is a walk to get there, but with such beautiful things to see along the way! You could easily bring an umbrella stroller if you wanted. My 3 yr. old walked and we carried the 20 month old down. Also, there is a kids club which you can bring your child to (not leave with a counselor) with tons of toys, art supplies, and great things for a child under three. We brought ours there sometimes in the afternoon if they were too tired to do another round of swimming after the afternoon nap. Truly, I cannot think of a more perfect place for kids that age.
