Maui Mosquitoes

Was is everyone's experience with mosquitoes on the island of Maui?? How bad are they or are they not that much of a problem.........my wife and I are going in November
See the thread about dengue fever on maui.

Looks like it may be under control.

Other than that it's the regular old island mosquito problem.

Hana had been the most widely reported with consistent problems.

We were in Maui the first week of October. Stayed in Kaanapali (Aston Mahana). We had no problems with bugs of any type. We drove to Hana and had no problems there either. Bugs are worse in Alabama (home).

Dan

Don't worry about it. I've lived here all of my life. The "problem" is on the east side of the island and is taken care of by taking minimal precautions like putting on mosquito repellant while visiting the east side of the island.

As are most tropical islands, pests like mosquitoes are common and this dengue fever "plague" is more hype than anything caused by overexposure of the media.

Come and visit and have a wonderful time!

Thanks to all for calming our fears. We are arriving in Maui tomorrow, and everyone is telling us to stay away from Hana. Unless someone else says otherwise, we are packing a bottle of Avon Skin-so-Soft, and driving anywhere we please.
Thanks again, Jerry

Tony

We just got back from Maui yesterday, had no problems with mosquitoes. They say in Hana theres more of a chance of encountering the denque fever. We didn't do that tour. Just bring the skin-so-soft and you'll be fine!
Have fun!!(I'm jealous)
What's the secret about Avon's Skin-so-Soft? An unexpected mosquito repellant in an acceptable formula?

Dick Dec 24th, 2001 05:21 AM

The original Avon Skin-so-Soft formula was shown in controlled clinical trials to have no mosquito-repelling capability whatsoever (it did have some effectiveness against small black flies due to its physical properties), but the myth about its effectiveness has persisted to the point that Avon recently has modified the formula to contain small amounts of a marginal repellant, I believe oil of citronella. Anyone who is seriously looking for protection from mosquitoes would be well advised to use a product containing DEET, which has been shown to be both effective and safe when used as directed.
