Maui: Me and Mom

Hi I want to go to Maui with my mom. I am 32 and mom is 65. We are looking to go in Sept after I hope all the kids are back in school. We want nice pools, but we are more beach people than pool people. We are looking for a resort that has lots of "stuff" so both of us will be entertained. I have been looking at the Hyatt Regency, Westin Maui and Sheraton. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I would say Hyatt. If my mom and I were
staying, I know that we would love the
beautiful grounds, nice restaurants and
great pool. Walking distance to the other hotels along the beach is nice too. I would skip the Westin. Too crowded and noisy - caters to families and kids.

Good luck.

I would second the Hyatt, My husband and I stayed there for our honeymoon and loved it so much we returned a few years later. I'ts right on Kaanapali Beach and close to Lahaina. You and your mom will love shopping and eating at the Whaler's Village and Lahaina which are both nearby.

The Sheraton is another nice hotel. I haven't stayed there but have been inside. It would be my second choice.

My Mom (62) and I (30) went back in 2000 and stayed in Kaanapali at The Whaler (close to the Hyatt). The area was perfect for us. Tips on things to do: Haleakala, Road to Hana, The Winery ( I think it's south of Kihei and the only winery on the island) and the Iao Needle. She really enjoyed the drives and easy hikes. We also took a snorkeling trip to Molokini. She's not a swimmer but she really enjoyed the boat ride to the island. Have a great time! We certainly did!!

My sister and I stayed at the Embassy Vacation Resort on Kaanapoli beach and loved it. Super nice beach and huge breakfast each morning w/free drinks from 4p-5p each day. Nice pool too and it's our fav.

FYI--Embassey is NOT on Kaanapali Beach.

I, too, given your criteria would vote for the Hyatt. Good Luck !!

You mention Kaanapali properties which will all satisfy the beach requirement. You'll also be right in an area of restaurants, shopping etc requiring little driving. The Whaler and Kaanapali Alii have condos right there too which give the flexibility to do some meals/snacks "at home" rather than restaurants all the time. Either way, you'll have a lovely time. Enjoy, Paul
