Maui & Kauai - here from Feb 8th - Mar13

our wonderful trip is finally coming to an end. we've enjoyed 3 wks in Kihei/Wailea area and always go to Po'olenalena beach, right past the 4 Seasons hotel area. it's our favourite, with not a ton of people around. Went through the tsunami warning by spending about 5 hrs at an upcountry golf course, but finally went back to our Maui home at Kamaole Sands. Weather in Maui & Kauai has been exceptionally breezy this year - first time in 5 yrs that we've worn sweaters at night. Right now we're at the east side of Kauai and we end up driving down to Poipu beach every day to get sun. Yesterday we went to Pt Allan to go on a 5 hr 'sunset cruise' that ended up being a 5 hr roller coaster ride. unless the winds subside, i'd highly recommend not doing more than a 2 hr boat ride in Kauai rightnow, there were people with buckets all over. We thought we'd wait and keep a boat experience for Kauai since we'd never done it before, but I prefer the calmer waters of Maui. We've been in Kauai for a week and although it's lovely, there's not a ton to do if weather isn't great. WENT to Kilohana plantation for brunch on Sunday and it was wonderful. Also, go to Kipu Falls - just great, especially if you're younger than us. All the young people were holding onto a rope and swinging out to jump into the swimming hole, it looked so fun but not if you're 60! Anyway, we're now ejoying the last 3 days of our trip, so life is good!

How did you decide where to stay in Kauai, and can you recommend a place that doesn't break the bank?

We're leaving tomorrow, and we've been gone for so long that we're actually axious to go home but we've had a wonderful time. iamq-Kamaole Sands is a great place, we go year after year, across from Kam 3 Beach. Prices range around $160 per night for l bedroom/2 bathroom place. Ours has a murphy bed in living room so it's perfect for a family of 4. We are RCI members so we have opportunities to stay in different places in Kauai however we are at Kauai beach villas this year (east side of island) We've stayed at Lawai Beach Resorts near Poipu before and preferred them becuase it's where the sun prefers to shine in Kauai. Kauai is a place where we think it would be wonderful to live, residents here say they welcome the rain but when you're here for the sun (to get away from snow) it's a bit depressing. Maui seems to be much safer in terms of weather! However, having said that - having the opportunity to visit these islands for a month is such a blessing. The prayers for the tsunami are always helpful - honestly, it does shock you to be in a situation such as this. Our whole family was here, grandchildren and all, so we were all together, which helped some! \

a friend and I recently formed a travel club, I've researched Kauai alot for about 2 months on and off and found that one of the nicer places and friendlier staff is at the Kauai Sheraton at Poipu beach. its on the sunnier most southern tip of the island and they gave our group the best rates (without sacrificing location) that i could get on the island.

our first trip to Kauai is going to be In Oct this year, we'll be learning surfing and doing alot of other things. our club is free for anyone who wants to join

To the previous reporter - the Sheraton Kauai seems real nice, we sunned there at the Poipu Beach almost daily, love that beach. we rented cabanas through the Sheraton Kauai and so am very familiar with the hotel. Have a great time!
