Alexander's in Wailea, Maui is so good! They serve fresh fish (many varieties) broiled or fried. Very casual with outdoor seating/torches. One of our favs!

Aloha Bill,
I'm a resident of Honolulu and have visited the neighbor islands many times. I don't have a favorite less-expensive restaurant in Maui. In Kauai, it has got to be the Hanamaulu Cafe, in the town of Hanamaulu. Good place to stop by for lunch on the way or back from the Canyon. They close around 1:30 for lunch. You must order the Hanamaulu chicken...it's their specialty. It's a local-style Japanese restaurant, but definitely more local than Japanese! On the Big Island, in Kona, there are two that I like: The Manago Hotel's restaurant which I believe was only open on certain days and limited hours. It's located in the Kealakekua/Capt. Cook area of Kona. Really "ono" (delicious) fried ahi (tuna). Then in the same area there's Teshima's, a combintion Japanese/American restuarant. Anything there is good. These are places I like best...very much the neighborhood restaurants, where the locals go. They are by no means touristy places. I usually stay at the King Kamehameha hotel (cheap rates, and nice, clean accommodations) but I enjoy popping into the Manago hotel for it's historical value. Walking into the Manago hotel is like stepping back in time, in the 40s or 50s. Have a great trip!!

Mama Dings on Maui--cheap and good food

Ok Bill, not exactly an entree but for the best shave ice on Kauai we liked A trailer on the main street leading into Hanalei town and Java Joe's or was it Joe Joes in Waimea near and on your way to the canyon. We did not find better shave ice on our trip (1wk Kauai 1 wk Oahu) and Andrew Dougherty recommends these places in the ultimate guide to Kauai, a great book for food choices and everything else.

YUM ... LOVED MIXING ICE CREAM WITH SHAVE ICE THEN TOPPING WITH SOME COCONUT!!!

Watch out though Dougherty gives opinions (something I look for in a guide book) and does not give a forks up to Bubba's Burgers.

...Shopping, check out Safeway in Kapaa although for just a tad more you can happen on some amazing Ahi in the fish section of foodland at Pville (if you are lucky). Locals scream about the prices at the later but I only find them slightly higher than home. I thought this did not say much since I live in NYC. Nevertheless this summer my sister from a rural town in Southern New Jersey also agreed the prices were not too much higher than home. This made me think Safeway must have flea market prices :) :). Just did not understand the high cost of supermarkets people have spoken about before on this board and actually even while in Hawaii.

Take me with you Bill!!!
To be fair I should at least try to give you what you were looking for. We went to the Plantation house in Waimea and I found the food mediocre. Entrees were about 18 dollars. I would not give a high rating but others in my group that have more traditional expectations from a meal, enjoyed it.

Also Hanalei wake up cafe was described to us by a local as having a breakfast comparable to Hanalei Bay Resort (which I enjoyed) at half the cost. Still went to HBR the view is so nice from the lanai of the restaurant (10-12 per person).

Not sure how closely you have cheap to inexpensive but Hanalei snack Village also does a good malasada but you need to get their early to beat the school kids. They are also always packed at breakfast so this looks like to cheap breakfast option to me. This is a stroll into town when you are waking at the crack of dawn, getting the morning cup of joe.
