Maui: Hyatt or Fairmont
We are going to Maui for 6 nights on our honeymoon in August and we are trying to figure out where to stay. It will be an extra $500 for the Fairmont over the Hyatt. The Hyatt aslo includes full breakfast while the Fairmont does not. What are the pros and cons to each with regards to location (we are really big BEACH people and he surfs), activites (such as hiking, water sports, etc), and dining/nightlife? I really rather not be surrounded by children on my honeymoon.
We will also be spending 6 nights in Kaui and we have decided on the Hyatt there. Does anyone have any suggestions/comments on the breakdown of the trip? I just don;t want to end up bored! Even though we love the outdoors and I can be entertained by sitting on a beach! Thanks for all of your help! |
I have stayed at both and loved them both. But would say that you should go for the Fairmont. Two reasons - 1 they have a lovely adults only pool - so you can be separated from the kids. Hyatt has a great pool- but I don't think any part of it is for adults only. 2 - the beach in front of the Fairmont is much better than at the Hyatt.
PS - You will LOVE the Hyatt on Kauai!! |
I would stay in Wailea if you don't want to be surrounded by tons of kids. Although at some resorts in Wailea there were a lot of kids. The Fairmont had TONS of kids on their beach when I was swimming there and there were a lot of big rocks in the water/by the shore. We stayed at the Renaissance Wailea and there were hardly any kids. It was a gorgeous place for our honeymoon. And there were surfers by us every day!

Oh I really have to go with the Fairmont. We stayed there over the summer and it was fantastic. We had a partial ocean view and a couple of nights we ordered room service and sat on the terrace and watched the sun go down, heavenly.
The staff was also very helpful and the buffet breakfast was the best breakfast I have ever had. Can you tell I liked this hotel? |
Thanks for all the great feedback. I just can't decide!

Hi, we stayed at the Hyatt in 2002 for our anniversary in March and while it was nice, we were dissapponted in the beach in the Kaanapalli area. The wailea are where the fairmont is located has a much better beach and the clarity and color of the water is beautiful, and in Kaanapali it was cloudy water with a brownish look to it.It was explained to us that there is s omething that drains into that area into the water that causes that.We will stay in Wailea next trip.

Thank you so much for your input! I was considering booking the Hyatt in Maui today but I may need to continue doing research. I would hate a cloudy beach. Is there any other hotels in the area that are a bit less expensive than the Fairmont? Thanks again for helping me plan my honeymoon!

Try to get the Bed and Breakfast special at the Four Seasons Resort Maui, next door to the Fairmont and on one of Maui's best big beaches, Wailea. Both Wailea and Kaanapali beaches are clear and blue, not brown and cloudy, unless it's been raining a lot (very infrequent for those areas).

What about the renaissance wailea..does it not still offer entertainment rates to lessen your price..and wailea is such a superior area to Kanapaali, I feel..the Renaissance also has a grouping of rooms separate from the main buiding that has some extras included...check it out.

Thanks again, I will look into both suggestions. I was under the impression that the FS would be even more expensive than the Fairmont. But on I'm going to investigate!!!

Have you looked for package prices for the fairmont on LuxuryLink.com?
I've seen great rates for the Fairmont there at times in the past. In fact there's an auction right now for a 5 night package including standard room and car which closes on 3/10/04. Current price is $2099. |
Also note that taxes and fees are included in the price at LuxuryLink.
I've used LL in the past and in places where taxes are as high as 22% that's a major savings which doesn't really jump out at you until you start doing price comparisons. |
