Maui helicopter ride in AM or PM?
We plan on taking a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian over the West Maui Mountains. Is the best time to do this in the morning or the afternoon. Not sure what the sun's position is during these times.
|
The position of the sun would not be as much a concern as the clouds on the windward side. As the day heats up and the trades blow in cool air from the ocean, the cloud layer forms around Pu`u Kukui, often bringing fog, mist and rain. The winds will also be stronger in the afternoon and will dictate to your pilot where he can fly. Depending on the conditions that day, you might miss many sights in the afternoon.
|
How many people are going?
Will the window shades be drawn? If the pilot is a smoker, it might decrease the visibility. Have you considered LASIK? |
In Maui the sun is in the east in the morning and the west in the afternoon - the same as everywheere else !

Best time is usually late morning, around 10/10:30. Some of the morning clouds will be gone, and you will get out and back before the afternoon ones roll in. I would check the paper a few days prior to try to find a clear day - clouds will be your biggest obstacle. Also, Blue Hawaiian is a great choice. They are a little more expensive, but have the best helicoptors with the widest range of view. Seating is usually based on your weight - so depending of the weight of the others in your party, you may be in the front seat or back (lighter folks sit in the front). If you plan to take photos, wear a dark shirt. You will get some reflection off the glass and a dark shirt helps minimize that. Some of the best photos I've taken on Maui are from a Blue Hawaiian tour. Have fun!

Lots of funny folks responding to this one!. Morning is the best because of winds and less clouds. If you get a "spinner" type pilot that makes you dizzy, tell him to cool it or you will barf all over his lovely chopper. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!! We got a Maui pilot like that and everyone got air sick. One word from you and they will be careful as no pilot wants to clean up after sick passengers!!

Thanks everyone to your replies - so morning it is! I think it's only a 30 minute flight anyway (can't afford more).
We have never been in a helicopter before so that was useful advice about giving the pilot warning signs :) Although we both *love* roller coasters. And thanks Maui rob for the dark shirt suggestion. I'll be sure to do that! |
