Maui, Hawai`i, O`ahu in September 1998
 

Have plans for a week on the islands, 3 days on Hawai`i and 2 each on the others. What restaurants would you recommend for us. Staying at Outrigger Reef in O`ahu, Royal Waiholoan on the big island and Royal Lahaina on Maui.

If you can just spend a little time in OAHU. Honolula is like Miami Beach and Wahkiki Beach is disappointing!A Ride arund the island is beautiful though! Go to KAUAI the island is beautiful!! with great beaches and plenty to do. Mauai is also a must with even more to do. The Royal Lahaina is a great Hotel. HAVE FUN!!

<BR>When on Oahu try to go to the OTHER side - very different. Go horseback riding on the beach a the Turtle Bay Hilton, have lunch at Jamison's by the Sea. Favorite restaurants in Waikiki are Michel's (at the Colony Surf) nd Sergios. Avoid Roy's Restaurant - not worth the hype. Visit Pearl Harbor and the Arizona, the Misssouri is there now too. Avoid a luau. Go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Have a fresh, hot malasada from Leonards Bakery. Take a catamaran ride for an hour out from in front of the hotels (our favorite time-out from a hot day in the sun!) Aloha ~

On the Big Island, the hotel restaurants on the Kohala or Gold Coast are good but expensive -- we like the ones at Hapuna Beach, but the Canoe House is supposed to be good too. Two wonderful places are Merriman's in Waimea, a short 30 minute drive from Kohala and Kilauea Lodge in Volcano....both are fabulous. Merriman's has the island's best chef and the Lodge is a great place to sink into a steak, baked brie and martini coma in front of a fireplace. If you want soemthing to take back to your room, go get pizza at Cafe Pesto in Hilo or upcountry Kohala coast.

has anyone been on the AmeriacanHawaiian cruise around the islands? Can you tell me anything about it?????

your trip is so fast..I spent lots of time on Maui..Spen an evening walking in Lahaina...shopping and so many resturants to chose all prices..I have been to most..a quick fish and chips Captain Dave's..sit under mango trees and people watch it's take out only..anyway If you want to know about Maui on average budget e-mail me and I'll answer ..I used the Fodor's book and it kept me busy for 14days last Sept..And I have been before.

Saw your reply on Fodors regarding Maui. We have never been there (or anywhere in Hawaii)and I am trying to research good places to stay. We are 2 adults and 2 children (teenagers) so I am thinking Kaanapali might be good--more touristy but enough things to do for the kids. Do you know anything about Aston Kaanapali Villas? That may be a good choice. What about staying in Kahana? Prices and beaches may be better? Are you familiar with Kahana Sunset? It looks nice and not a hi-rise. Any suggestions would be great--our budget is $125/night.

Erin, we stayed at the Kahana Sunset in early May. It's probably about 10 years old, right on a nice beach, beautiful landscaping, nice pool. We reserved our 2 bedroom condo over the internet - I think they are also available through agencies. We had 7 people (3 generations) and the condo worked out nicely. We usually ate breakfast and dinner there. (Restaurants are expensive for 7 people) There are several gas grills and tables right beside the beach. The waves crashed loudly right below us. It is about a 10 minute drive to Kaanapali and farther to Lahaina, but we liked it because it didn't seem so touristy. We really enjoyed the drive north from Kahana around the northwestern side of Maui, even through the car rental contracts say not to do it. It's narrow, but paved all the way.
