Maui flash floods?
 

18 days and counting!!!

Everytime I check the weather in Maui I see
Rain and flash flood warnings! Can someone
who has just returned give me a weather update? Also, are the
whales still there?

Weather was gorgeous. We had a fantastic lightning storm one night and a torreential downpour, but other than that it was fairly typical weather. Highs in the low 80s and low in mid 60s. The whales should be there through March or so. Late March is pushing it. We even saw some over on the east side of the island two years ago as last as mid April.

Stop cehcking the weather, don't worry about it and go. It rains on the island somewhere every day and it may or may not be where you are.

I am on Maui now. Our first 2 days were steady rain..just like being home in Oregon except warmer. There were flash flood warnings but we did not experience any closed roads in Upcountry or Kihei. We did come across pockets of standing water. Yesterday the trade wind and sun both returned. It is good to have a mental list of "in case it rains" ideas just in case. Reading and naps are high on our list!

Barbara are the whales in sight?

I was there the same time as iamq. Lots of whales up and down the coast. The day we had the big storm, we were driving in the upcountry. We did experience some low clouds and heavy rain but then it was beautiful. We got home just in time for the lightening and thunder to start. Barbara, looks like we missed the 2 days of steady rain.

I think the flash flood reports are most important for people considering hiking in flash flood areas, which would mostly be the hikes to waterfalls near the road to Hana and beyond. The average tourist need not fret too much, I think.

Natbug: Whales still quite active in Maalaea Bay, which is where we are staying. Two of them put on quite a show late this afternoon, to the applause of congenial group of folks watching from condo lawn.

We have vacationed in Maui before but never in the spring.It's funny how Maui keeps calling you back!

Any restaurant recommendations in the Waileau and Kihei area? I heard the Roys in Kihei closed.

We ate sort of cheap this time, but there are always the high end restos is the hotels. Capicshe? in Wailea is one place that is on our list for next time. Gannons on one of the Wailea golf courses is supposed to have great fish preparations.
