Maui - family's 1st trip
Hi. My family is planning our first trip to Maui next spring and we'd love some suggestions as to where to stay. Our children are 10 and 12. We're looking for a nice 2-bedroom condo unit with a pool and nice beach. Which is better for families - the Kaanapali or Wailea area? Thank you.

We've been to Maui several times and our favorite is the Wailea area. You might try the Grand Wailea. It is realy geared for kids and there is great snorkling right down the beach there. The scenry in the Wailea area is really more beautiful than the Kaanapali area. Kaanapali is more touristy. It just depends on what you want.

The Wailea side, for sure. Less touristy.
Beautiful and very tropical.

Aloha!

Kaanapali if you want to be where the action is and close to everything. Wailea if you want a quieter experience. There is very little to do in Wailea, so if you stay there be prepared to drive if you want to see and do things outside your own resort.

I think that the Kaanapali Alii or the Whaler(almost next door) would be the best bet for a family looking for a condo. I agree that although the Wailea area is nice, Kaanapali/Lahaina has a lot more to keep children(and adults)occupied. Both areas are great. Good Luck !!

Highly recommend the Elua condos in Wailea--great beach, nice pool--and on the Wailea walking strip--2 doors down from the Grand wailea. Our kids are 13, 11 and 8--just got back and all had a wodnerful time. Definitely drive to Lahaina for the day.

Lee: I have repeated this at this site before, but if you really want to enjoy Maui, stay the bulk of time at a condo (I like Makena Surf) then book a few nights a the Grand Wailea right down the road. MS has a great little safe beach out front for boogie boarding and the E and F buildings (my favorites) are direct ocean front. The pool activities at the GW will be a bit hit with your kids - river, slides, water elevators, etc. We usually stay 2 or 3 nights at the end our trip at the GW which is a nice change for the kids. You will have a great time I know. Book with a travel agent to avoid the rack rates charged by organizations such as Destination Resorts. If you need a recommendation, just let me know. My boys are 12 and 15 and we are leaving next week for Maui for a 3rd trip. Makena and surrounding areas are great. Have fun and try to book your flight directly into Maui - much less hassle with kids!
