Maui Excursion Recommendation
First time visit to Maui for 7 days in early April. A friend has recommended an excursion on Trilogy which would entail a ¾ day trip via catamaran to small island – Lanai. Besides the on-ocean sailing, supposedly great beach and snorkeling available on Lanai. Price isn’t cheap; although I’m willing to pay if worthwhile. However if I can get same on Maui itself, why bother? Has anyone done this and would they recommend? If you do recommend do you have any thoughts on pros or cons of sunrise vs. sunset itinerary? (Getting up early is not an issue for us) Thanks for your feedback.

I did it and I would recommend it. I love sailing though so it was a great day. Sailing back from Lanai at the end of our trip was great! The food was really good, the staff was fun and friendly and we emjoyed spending time in Lanai.

I haven't done it, though many have posted it is nice. We had a packed week as it was when we were there on Maui, and still didn't make all the sights I'd hoped for on the island.
I'd save it for trip #2 myself, but to each his own. |
I haven't done that trip myself, but if snorkeling is high on your list, I'd make time for it. The snorkeling on Maui is not as good as it used to be, but maybe Lanai still is. I would go in the morning, as the wind can come up later in the day, which can also decrease visibility.

The snorkeling on Maui was great in 2005. The area around Black Rock in front of the Sheraton was facinating. However, we drove up the coast to the Honolua Bay & it was like snorkeling in a giant fishbowl. (The trilogy boat had also docked there) Some people from the Sheraton had paid to go done the road & dock at the bay! I don't know much about snorkeling at Lanai. Other people that paid to go on a trip to Molokini were disappointed & said that Black Rock was much better.
