Maui Convertible Question

We are thinking about renting a convertible Mustang or Sebring next year in Maui. Can thieves get into the trunk thru the passenger area? I know they can get into any car's trunk, just wondering if they can get to it easier that way. We are mainly concerned b/c on our departure day, we will be driving around with all our luggage most of the day. Anyone know if you can check your chk-on luggage early and get a locker for your carry-ons at the airport? Thanks a lot, Lo in VA

I don't think thieves can get into the trunk of a convertible any easier than a sedan. Get the convertible, we did and it was really cool. Especially driving to Hana.

No lockers. Not sure you can check-in before 2 hours anymore. Convertibles are big targets. Aren't there trunk buttons in the car? Your bellman will often hold the bags for you.

Agree with islandmom, leave it with the hotel baggage claim before any final siteseeing. Boils down to convenience vs. security. If you do decide to chance it, never open your trunk and don't visit anyplace where you have to venture away from your car (eg Iao Needle).

For the amateur thief, I think the type of convertible top would be a factor in a break in. If the material is easily and quietly cut with a knife ("a rag top" convertible) would be an easier target, than entering a trunk (makes noise, requires force).

That being said, we spent a week on Maui with a Sebring convertible and kept things in the trunk, but we avoided leaving cameras, wallets etc in the car and if we did the valuables are kept out of sight and not easily found in the trunk. Some have suggested putting on bumper stickers to disguise your car from looking like a rental (have not tried, personally).

Hope this helps. :o

We just got about a week ago. We rented a convertible sebring on Maui for 1 week. I say definitely go with it. We left all our belongings in the trunk - but always kept our camera and purse with us at all times. The first and last day - we also had our luggage int he car. It was fine. We left our car in Lahaina street parking all day while we did activities, etc and it is a very safe place. I wouldn't recommend taking a luggage filled car to Hana or to park at an isolated beach.

Just plan accordingly - and do a more populated activity on the last day. Definitely definitely go for the convertible - it really adds to the Maui experience.

Most cars have a trunk release button inside. This is definitely true for the Mustang as we were warned by the rental agent that the trunk is not necessarily totally secure.

As mentioned before, just make sure when parking, you don't access the trunk so others will not be able to see what's inside.

The inside trunk release on the Sebring only works when the key is in and turned to "on". Otherwise, the button on the keyfob opens it. Still, a motivated thief could probably pop the lock and get in if he or she wanted.

If I can put my recommendation in for the Sebring, here it is: MUCH larger back seat, NOTICEABLY larger trunk than the Mustang. I own a Sebring, a friend owns a Mustang, and my car is faster and much more comfortable. And, if we're loading groceries or bags, guess who has to drive?

We got a convertible Camaro (I don't think we had a choice), but it was great. The trunk space was a LOT smaller than we thought. I think if a thief wants to get into your car bad enough, it doesn't matter what kind it is.

Definitely go for the convertible. I prefer the Sebring over the Mustang, much roomier and more comfortable. Friends drove the firebird and we would never get that. We didn't have any problems, but did keep billfolds, purses, etc with us or locked in glove box or locked console. Consider the Jeep Wrangler also. We rented one on Oahu and had such a blast that we specifically requested one last year when we went to Kauai and probably will again this year. Most hotels will hold your luggage for you and some will even work with you on a late checkout. Have fun! Don't forget to go to the Big Beach - it's where the locals hang out and it is my favorite.

have rented both and did not like Mustsang - go with Sebring.

Thank you everyone for your valuable input. If anyone knows where to get a good rate on the Sebring please let me know. Thanks again. I love these forums, they're addictive!
