Maui Catamaran Accident
 
Catamaran accident off Maui kills 1; 50 people rescued

The Coast Guard helped rescue 50 people from the whale-watching vessel Kiele V off Kahana Beach.

What an <u>awful</u> accident...but I can't imagine a cat being dismasted by &quot;gusts&quot;--and then it sank too?!

IMHO the dismasting likely averted a larger tragedy in that cats can turn turtle in strong winds or at least go on their side until the mast breaks away.

What a terrible tragedy. But- 22mph winds? Why on earth were they 2 miles out with those winds and high seas? They certainly weren't going to see much in the way of whales. Sounds more like a sunset booze cruise.

It could be that he had his main too close hauled. With the sails that tight a high gust could maybe do that?

What a shame. We sailed on the Kiele V when we stayed at the Hyatt.
