Is it recommended to rent a car in Maui? We will be there for 7 days in July. Any recommendations or good local deals?

A car is a must in Maui. We have never used a local company but we compare the national rental car company rates--check rental car codes, coupons, AAA, Sidestep, Costco and any online specials.

We have used Avis and Budget on Maui.

We rented from Kihei Rent a Car and got an older model jeep wrangler with soft top and safari doors. We were allowed to take it anywhere on the island. We really liked the folks that worked there - it's a small local group. We didn't have to worry about small dings or scratches since they weren't new cars.

Unless you are visiting Maui at a very busy time, there will be plenty of cars available. I usually get the best deal from naming my own price at Priceline.com.
