Maui - breakfast in your hotel?
 

What do most of you do for breakfast while in Maui and staying at a hotel

We will have two kids with us but none of us are big breakfast eaters so don't want to do a big meal every morning. I am sure we will have a nice breakfast somewhere at least once or maybe twice but what is in the area for something quick?

We are 90% sure we will be staying at the Grand Wailea

Also while at the pool at the Grand is there reasonable snacks, sandwiches, etc to eat pool side? Or is everything there overpriced?

We stayed at the Grand Wailea and loved it. Some mornings we went to the Kula Cafe in the resort - which is just a shop really - for yogurt or a croissant on our way to the pool or beach. We were in one of the terrace rooms and it was on our way. One morning we went to the Kihei Cafe for a great breakfast on their outdoor patio - inexpensive and good.

The poolside grill has great hamburgers and hot dogs, not inexpensive but in line with every other place in Maui (home of the $12. burgers LOL).

Seriously, if you don't mind their food, drive into Kihei and go to the Mickey D's. We did that a couple of times when staying at the Grand Wailea.

If you're not big breakfast eaters, why not invest in a small ice chest from the grocery store, and buy milk, some cereal, paper bowls and plastic spoons, a little fruit, and maybe some muffins. I can't imagine a better setting for breakfast than on your balcony.

I am trying to stay away from McDonalds, especially when on vacation. We will go there in a pinch but as a last resort.

We did think about having cereal in the room, thanks for suggesting that. We were going to bring a collapsable cooler so that we can take it to the beach some days when wanting lunch on the beach.

Since we plan on being in Maui for 9 nights we will be stopping for some supplies. What would be a good place to stop for supplies that is on the way from the airport to the Grand Wailea?

Costco and Walmart [and I think K-Mart] are near the airport. If you wait til Kihei, there's Safeway, Star Market and I think at least one more market as well as Longs, etc. You won't have a problem finding places to buy food & supplies. They are plentiful. Have a wonderful time.

A little hidden secret about the Grand Wailea....they have small refrigerators that they will bring to you in your room! At last check the charge was $25 for as long as you need it. You cannot reserve in advance, but we've never had to wait for more than a few hours after check in. We always get one and stock up with milk, yogurt, juice, bagels/cream cheese, fruit, and perhaps a beer or two. Great for breakfast and snacks. Sure beats keeping ice in the cooler!

The charge for the fridge at GW was $25 when we were there last summer. That is definitely a nice way to go.

On a side note, we stayed in the Napua Tower. With that, we were able to partake in a very nice continental breakfast each morning, cookies/ice tea/lemonade throught the day and evening cocktails and appetizers. I know we paid a premium for this but honestly, there were a few nights that we did not go out to dinner because the appetizers were so good and so plentiful.

For supplies, there is a K-Mart near the airport. There also is an ABC Store at the Shops of Wailea next door to the GW. In the shops, there is also a good deli. We found ourselves shopping there a few days in the morning and getting sandwiches before heading out to the pool or beach area.

Finally, the $12 burger is no joke. I think the thing, for me at least, that added insult to injury was the fact that I had to leave my chair to fetch that burger and my $9 mai tais as pool side service is basically non existent at the GW! Moreover, there is only one snack area at the GW that makes the food so depending on where you have camped out for the day, it could be quite a hike. I don't mind the exercise but I did expect a little more out of the GW.

You will probably be better off driving into Kihei for most meals--there's a wide range of restaurants, and some have very reasonable prices. (I believe there's an IHOP--or maybe Denny's? And chains other than McDonald's.)

There are a couple little shopping centres in Kihei that would be inexpensive and fun for your breakfast and your lunch. If you take the main road from Wailea to Kihei you can't miss them. For example there are places like a coffee shack that also sells bagels with cream cheese; a Pita Paradise which has various pita sandwiches...

Have fun with the kids.

If getting a frig into your room is an option, that's definitely the way to go! I've always had a kitchenette in Hawaii and make excellent use of it. Fresh tropical fruit is wonderful and often available in shops already cut up, cereal, yogurt, simple sandwich makings, storing leftovers from restaurants meals, etc.

I rarely eat breakfast, but when I'm in Hawaii, I find I'm a big, daily breakfast fan for the following reasons: (1) the time difference causes me to wake up much earlier than usual, (2) due to all the wonderful activities available on Maui, I would be famished by 11am if not for a big breakfast, and most importantly (3) banana macademia nut pancakes with lilikoi syrup, portuguese sausage, loco moco, spam, fresh pineapples, passionfruits, mangos, POG, 100% kona coffee just ain't the same anywhere else.

All things to consider if you think you're not big breakfast eaters...

Near the GW in Kihei is Stella Blues Cafe. www.stellablues.com. And on 1 of the 9 days you're there, you should stop by the Gazebo at the Napili Shores for the best macademia nut pancakes.

Hopefully, here_today_gone2maui can chime in with some nearby quick choices for you.

I agree about big breakfasts on vacation in Hawaii!! I'd rather make lunch in my room or from an ABC, and (at least a few days) splurge on those pancakes, etc. mentioned above.
